Louisiana Attorney General Investigates Red Cross [Humane Society Also]

NEW ORLEANS — State Attorney General Charles Foti is investigating complaints that American Red Cross volunteers improperly diverted money and supplies meant for hurricane victims in New Orleans.

Foti spokeswoman Kris Wartelle told The Washington Post that the probe would be announced Monday. On Friday the Red Cross announced, under pressure from Congress, that it was investigating claims that some of its volunteers engaged in widespread theft in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The Post, citing an unidentified Red Cross official, said the organization has dismissed three of its volunteers who had been involved in food and shelter operations in the city because of "allegations involving waste and abuse."

Katrina struck southeastern Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast on Aug. 29. The Red Cross had 235,000 volunteers working in the Katrina disaster area. The charity has said it responded to Katrina the best it could in circumstances almost unimaginable, while acknowledging that it stumbled in "technology, logistics and coordination."

Foti's office said earlier this month that it also is looking into complaints against another well-known national charity, the Humane Society of the United States. Wartelle said the office has received complaints that even though the organization had raised millions of dollars, it had not done enough to reunite Katrina evacuees with their pets.

Hey, what's to be surprised about? The Red Double-Cross did that after 9-11, they're just following their established precedent...

I'm wary of donating additional money to the red cross because of the way they handled 9-11 money (bought a new phone system IIRC).

I keep hearing on the radio from them that we need to continue to donate to Katrina relief and yet we hear that millions of tax dollars haven't been spent yet.

The Red Cross is the reason that I donate to the Salvation Army.

I'd looking into The United Way, they're always stealing money or helping themselves before others!

Lets see here, the African-American cops filmed looting the Walmart while chatting with the MSNBC reporter, are not going to be charged with any wrong doing. The Red Cross is treated like the looters. Too funny. I don't feel bad for the Red Cross because I learned after 911 they are not worthy of support. Sounds like they all deserve each other.

Yeah, and we can't have that. Diverting money and supplies is supposed to be the domain of politicians, not lowly volunteers.

We're supposed to trust this Foti guy to do an investigation? All of Louisiana politics is corrupt from what I can gather.

Foti is a long time Landrieu family minion. If Mitch is able to win the Chocolate City's mayor's race and use it to vault into the governor's mansion in 2007, the Landrieu oligarchy will be complete.

Well, well, I wondered how long it would take before the HSUS efforts would come out. These Highly visiable fundraisers always pay off for them.

People are starting to catch on to PETA, but most people still think the HSUS is an up and up organization.

Maybe this will place the spotlight on the HSUS. It needs a spotlight -- people need to quit sending them money, instead send it to the local shelters (the ones that the HSUS don't support financially, and in fact charge them for 'educational' materials).

During the Katrina aftermath a Louisiana volunteer shelter worker who was there actually rescuing animals told me about how the local shelter voluteers did all the work -- while HSUS officials preened in front of cameras pleading for donations. Typical of the HSUS.

Red Cross: sucks
United Way: sucks
Salvation Army: now we're talking!

Isn't it a shame that of the national "non-profit" orgs, the Salvation Army is the only one we can trust to do the right thing?

'Non-profit' is almost meaningless.

It has nothing to do with how they spend their money.
As long as they spend it all, voila', no profit.

There is a local 'charity', I won't name, for mentally handicapped children and adults.
Their long term goal is to build a 'retreat' on a lake with cabins, etc. "for the children".

Wanna bet who uses the 'retreat'.

New wave of articles today ...

Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa, has said Red Cross volunteers may have committed criminal fraud. The accusations include improperly diverting relief supplies and violating Red Cross rules by using felons as volunteers in the disaster area. Mr. Grassley has threatened to rewrite or revoke the organization's charter if it does not overhaul its operations. ...

Louisiana Investigating Red Cross on Relief - New York Times

And this piece from the Paperchase ...

[JURIST] Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti, Jr. [official website] Monday announced an investigation into the American Red Cross [official website] over accusations that some of its volunteers stole money from Hurricane Katrina [JURIST news archive] relief efforts. Foti reportedly opened the investigation after Red Cross officials told Congress that it was reviewing reports of theft. Foti has asked for information from the organization on three volunteers fired by Red Cross. The Attorney General's office has a news release on the investigation, as well as another inquiry [news release] opened into the Humane Society.

The Red Cross announced last week that it was investigating allegations of mismanagement [news release] of funds by volunteers. The organization has been under pressure from Sen. Chuck Grassley [official website; news release] to change its operating procedures to avoid fraud. Federal authorities indicted almost 50 Red Cross employees [JURIST report] late last year on fraud charges for stealing relief funds. AP has more.
