I can testify to this from personal experience.
Years ago I was involved in a car accident and my child was injured.
I live in a small town - and people began to "talk"

People who claimed to know the details of my accident informed others I was drunk, I was on drugs, I was speeding, I was going to have my kids taken away from me.
One guy even told some of my family I had been decapitated - he "knew" this because he was EMT and had responded to the accident (don't ask me WHY he told people this!)

Well...the sordid truth is...I lost control when I hit a patch of ice. It happens all the time.
When the police finished their investigation, and the newspapers accurately reported the situation, that still didn't stop the rumormongers. The next story was I had bribed someone to hide the "truth"
Sigh.

All I could guess was that people don't like to think these things can happen to them. So when bad things happen to someone else they try their best to find fault - to place blame. I think this way they somehow feel better and tell themselves the same thing would never happen to them.

A few people were truly vicious and just made up stories to be cruel. I'll never understand why some people are like that.

I'm a bit saddened to see something similar here on this thread.
One poster wrote about what people are "saying" in the community.
I know from experience that when people "talk" they are usually making it up as they go.

If the info doesn't come from the news, the police, or the family - it isn't reliable.

Interesting and right on point.

This is one of my button-pushing type threads, and I don't even have a personal reason for it. I get angry at the knee-jerking and fingerpointing that goes on around here sometimes. I know better, but I don't always respond well.

The worst are the inevitable (should start happening any time now...) summertime "kid locked in hot car" stories.

Hate those.

Last month, the evening news showed the picture of Carlie's mother being arrested. She was charged with stealing jewelery from her father's house and drug possession.

Oh yeah...I know what you mean.
We had that happen up here about 10 yrs ago.
Mom was sick, so she put the baby in her husband's car.
On his way out the door she asked him to drop the baby off at daycare.

He must have had alot on his mind - maybe there was a meeting - or maybe he's "foggy" in the morning and this wasn't part of his normal routine.
Anyways...he forgot about the baby and went straight to work.
He didn't realize his mistake until lunchtime, and then it was too late.

Can you imagine how awful that was for both of them?
But apparantly people thought their suffering wasn't enough - they had to write newspaper articles and letters to the editor about this guy - wondering why he hadn't been brought up on criminal charges - why wasn't he in jail?
People really wanted blood.
