I live in Sarasota. The talk has always been that the mother knew Smith from previous drug purchases. The talk was that Carly was supposedly picking up a package from him to bring to her mother. I hate rumors, but this one has stayed around a long time.
I always wondered why she didn't run when he tried to kidnap her. It always appeared that she knew him. Many drug dealers give packages of drugs to high school kids to deliver. They work cheap, and when caught do not go to jail as long as an adult would. The police continously was asking everyone to look for a pink back pack that Carly was wearing. It was never found.
Carly was abducted during the afternoon, on a sunny day. She was coming home from her the house of a friend. Carly never resisted Smith. If a molester wanted to randomly pick up a young girl, I doubt it would be behind a car wash that is seldom used. The walk way behind the car wash is not clearly visable. I use this car wash frequently. Until the abduction, I never knew there was a walkway in back.
I suspect that Smith knew she would be there. It was reported that he drove his car, parked it and waited for her. Horrible to say, but maybe Smith was a lover of her mother. The mother had drug problems for many years which led to her divorce. That is a fact. We will never know the truth. The mothers relationship with Smith, if any, never was brought out during the trial.
I thought it was a Saturday morning.
The undercover officer should have taken her straight to rehab under the condition she stay there and he wouldn't press charges.
Somehow, I could see any one of us going off the deep end if in her shoes.
But if she was much later than expected, wouldn't her parents have called the home where she'd spent the night first, to ask if and when she'd left? If so, and if she went more or less straight home from there, she wouldn't have been more than 9 minutes past ETA when they called police. I haven't followed the details of the case closely, but something's odd here. Perhaps Carlie had gone off somewhere on her own steam, instead of heading straight home, and was finally headed in the direction of home again when the camera caught her abduction. The timing would still be a heck of a coincidence, though,
Either way, sad.
Good grief! How can any man be that horny?
At 6:30 pm her family calls local authorities to report her missing."
IOW she was reported missing practically instantly. Sounds like she was on a very tight leash.
I hate rumors
__________
as you then begin to tell us all the rumors that put the story into the worst possible light, including making Carlie complicit in the whole thing. All without a shred of actual evidence.
She's not a bad lookin woman. Carlie looked exactly like her.
If true, I would think the father would have been all over it in the press.
Dunno, It's been years for me. I'm not anywhere near there yet...
It's not the looks, its the drugs...
That's ludicrous. Whatever was going on at home had nothing to do with a girl being abducted from a public place by a monster. Many girls could have been in that place at that time, irrespective of what might have been going on at home.
If not for the monster, Carlie would still be among us. It really is that simple.
He lives in another state, and has nothing to do with the mother. Perhaps, as respect to Carly, he didn't want to drag out all the dirty laundry. What would it have accomplished anyway? Smith is an animal. Our society is rid of him. He will never, again, kidnap, rape or murder another young child. He has a daughter the same age as Carly. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
I just wish the child could have had a stable, loving, two-parent home. From everything you read, it does not sound like she did. It may or may not have played a role in her killing, I don't know. Of course, no one is to blame for her murder other than the monster who did it, but I wish her time on earth had been a little more stable.
Carlie's father and his father seemed to be OK - they were the ones who spearheaded the drive for "Carlie's Law" with Katherine Harris and others, before it got watered down and ineffective. They live in New York and administer a foundation in Carlie's name which helps other child victims.
In following some of this case, from the Amber Alert forward, but not in great detail, I got the impression that the only rumors linking Smith, the monster, with Susan Schorpen, were that they both sometimes drank at the same bar, but didn't know each other.
During the search for Carly, Sarasota had 24 hour news coverage. After viewing the abduction tape, everyone had their own view. The daily discussion, for many Sarasota citizens was the news about Carly.
The mother had previous drug charges, that is a fact. The press and the police were very responsible in the way they reported and handled the news. It was reported that drugs was a factor in the divorce. Why the father did not get custody was never told.
her child is killed, she is still in jail,, no sympathy for an obvious distraught grieving mother, not even released to attend a funeral; and the hideous lawyer lynn swann has never served one day in jail, and she was convicted of assisting a terrorist. I think the justice system in this country at times is out of control but I guess money and postion allows certain perks, flashing someone never brought down any buildings or killed our military men.
