Woman, 75, uses knife, fork to fight off burglar

07:42 PM EST on Thursday, March 16, 2006 By MARIA KOTULA / 6NEWS

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Rock Hill police are looking for a burglar who is preying on the elderly. Investigators said he targeted a woman and a man.

This is a case were the burglar probably thought he found the perfect victim. A little old lady too frail and too scared to fight back, boy was he wrong.

"I was trying to get his eye, but I missed," Maggie Robinson said.

Robinson is 75-years-old. She is petite and she lives alone. But those circumstances did not paralyze her with fear when a burglar kicked in her door Tuesday morning.

"He kept saying, where is your money? And he tried to go through my pockets and pulled my clothes off," Robinson said.

Robinson began hitting the intruder with her fist and in the scuffle she found a weapon.

"What did you grab?” 6NEWS asked.

"This fork, but he knocked it out of hands. Then I got this knife," Robinson said.

After the burglar knocked the knife away she said he grabbed her purse. That is when she threw a jar at him and he knocked over the TV.

Little did he know Robinson was trying to get to her gun in the other room.

She said the man finally took off on foot that is when she called police.

"The thing that alarms us now is that we have a second incident," police said. "Two streets over the following night is what we believe the same suspect attacked an elderly gentlemen, 76-years-old broke into his house."

Police said that victim did have a gun, but the suspect took it from him.

"So now we are real concerned because the suspect has a loaded handgun," police said.

Police told Robinson it is dangerous to fight with a suspect, but she is proud of her actions and has a new plan of attack.

"I got a hammer under here now and I got some mace," Robinson said.

If anyone has seen any suspicious characters around the Maple Street area of Rock Hill, officers said they should call Rock Hill police at 803-329-7293.

Police believe the suspect may be a drug addict who is preying on the elderly just to find enough money to get his next fix.

The old man probably did not want to kill the crook, thried to scare him away and let the bustard get too close.

Lesson to take away from this is show no mercy, kill the low life straight away. If he broke in to your house he is a threat to your life and property and is deserving of no respect or mercy.

Yeah, dangerous for the burglar! "Put a fork in him, he's done."

Is it the muliebrity of the victim that altered the focus of the mediots? Are burglars only "alleged burglars" when a gun is used?
