Embattled Reiner slams his critics - He says they won't address merits of his preschool initiative.

BEVERLY HILLS - Facing a state audit and possible criminal investigation of the state commission he chaired, movie director Rob Reiner on Monday said his opponents are targeting him for attacks to avoid discussing the merits of the universal preschool initiative he put on the June ballot.

"They will do whatever it takes to knock this thing out," he said in an interview with The Bee. "So they will attack me because they know they can't talk about the initiative."

Opponents responded that they have discussed the shortcomings of Proposition 82, including their argument that raising taxes on the wealthy to pay for preschool for all 4-year-olds could harm the state economy.

"We are not the ones who have called for any investigations," said Joel Fox, the opposition campaign's co-chairman. "That has come from the legislators or the press."

But Reiner pointed out that the opposition campaign's original name was "Stop the Reiner Initiative."

"Stop Reiner!" he exclaimed. "Stop Reiner? Stop Reiner from what? From giving kids preschool?"

For the past three weeks, Reiner has been under fire from lawmakers because the First 5 California commission he chairs spent $23 million in taxpayer money on ads promoting preschool while Reiner was qualifying his "Preschool for All" initiative for the ballot.

Reiner sponsored Proposition 10, the 1998 initiative that created the commission he chairs and raised tobacco taxes to pay for early childhood programs.

"This money generated by Proposition 10 was not a private slush fund for Mr. Reiner to use," said Assemblyman Dave Cox, R-Fair Oaks. "It appears that is what has transpired."

Rob Reiner's under investigation for suspected criminal misconduct and like any good liberal, he still manages to make all about HIM.

Hey, Meathead, when you use someone else's money, it's not giving, it's stealing.

Why doesn't Meathead just have a pre-school telethon for all but the rich kids? Surely he and his Hollywood brothers & sisters wouldn't mind forking over some of their stinking money. After all, they can afford it, have too much and are the ones with guilty consciences.

Dummy that SOB up already!!!!!!

Where's Archie when you need him?

Oh, that's right, Carroll O'Connor is an even bigger Commie than da Meathead!!!

I used to love that show when I was dumb and politically naive. But I've come to be offended by it. From day one the agenda was to make all non-Democrat non-liberals look like ignorant racists.

Those were the days, eh?

Poor Rob. I'm sure he's always believed that only Republicans do wrong, and that anything he does is right just because his intentions are pure. I'll bet it's never occurred to him that he could actually be held responsible for breaking the law, or that anyone could legitimately object to his activities.

I'm experiencing such schadenfreude!

Geez, what an egomaniac.

How about this, Rob? Stop Reiner from making pre-schools as ineffective as our elementary and High Schools.

The opposition was indeed successful in shifting the focus of their attack to the Meathead.

It is great irony that Reiner continues to support that focus, even in his impassioned self defense. Some folks must be retrained every morning.

Many call it a super-sized ego mixed with a healthy dose on megalomania. I submit that Reiner is simply SIMPLE.

"The 59-year-old Democrat said he had nothing to do with the $23 million ad campaign that aired from November to mid-January promoting preschool."

There's something fundamentally wrong about using taxpayer money to pay for ads advocating higher taxes.

There are no merits to his proposal. There is no right to "preschool" nor should there be. All it amounts to is an attempt to put people into indocrination at earlier ages.

Its all for the children, huh? Now Rob if you think its such a great idea - set up your own preschool foundation and pay for it out of your own pocket and that of your rich liberal friends but leave the rest of us out of it.

"Stop Reiner!" he exclaimed. "Stop Reiner? Stop Reiner from what? From giving kids preschool?"

First of all, who says it's Mr. Reiner's responsibility to 'give' anybody preschool? The decision for any child to go to preschool should be made by the child's PARENTS, NOT the STATE, and certainly not a big Hollywood Liberal like Rob Reiner.

Reiner should just stick to what he does best: Making movies--and even that's been rather questionable of late. He hasn't had a bona fide hit since "When Harry Met Sally" premiered back in 1989.

Aint nothing free ma'am.
