At least in my day,the Army was quite skilled in the art of turning fat slobs into reasonably (or very) fit individuals. I was 20 pounds lighter, and far more fit, when I finished BCT than when I started.

They still do. But they want a fighting chance at it from the start, so there are some minimum physical requirements.

Obesity to the Army is not 20 pounds... its not 50 pounds. It's anything Over 50 pounds over weight.... Really quite sad that most young people now days are the fat....

When I went into basic training {age 18} in the Air Force in 1976, I GAINED 23 pounds in 4 weeks {went from 123 to 146 pounds}; then got a little sick in the 5th week and lost 8 pounds. Needless to say, my fatigues were a little snug there for a while.

I had a similar weight loss when I went through Basic at Ft. Benning and I wasn't fat either :)

And it enabled me to drop a weight class in wrestling too....
