O'Connor May Sit on Bench Again

By Tony Mauro Legal Times March 13, 2006

The next stage of retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's public life began taking shape last week: a combination of speaking out, receiving accolades and even, she hinted, sitting as a judge again. In a talk Thursday at Georgetown University Law Center, she demurred when it was suggested she could be more candid now that she's no longer a justice: "I've retired, but I'm still a federal judge." Retired justices can sit by designation on any federal court, but O'Connor did not indicate where she hopes to sit.

Saying "I'm still a federal judge" doesn't even come close to suggesting that one is planning on hearing cases again.

So this is where the phrase "sit on it" came from in the TV series Happy Days? Sure, sit on it, Justice O'Connor...

Ex-justices have sat on circuit courts in the past.

What a different country we would have today if the Presidents conservatives elected had only appointed conservative judges.

The courts have too much power! No one is listening to me on this.

Judicial Review isn't in the Constitution - thus there is no real check on it. Congress can (theorically) pass a law to go around a decision, but it only takes one lawsuit to throw out said law.

The judges are the new aristocracy and O'Conner's statements prove it.

If she gets designated for the 9th circuit, she could move that court sharply to the right.

Sandra Day O'Connor was one of two of the STUPIDEST things that Ronald Reagan EVER did. The other was appointing George HW Bush as his VP! The Bushies are too much East Coast liberal to lead this country properly.

I think this woman SHOULD sit in a court again.

Nothing wrong in a little competition for Judge Judy.

And besides, "Judge Sandra" has a nice ring to it!
