Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread Thirty-Five

Posted on 03/09/2006 10:08:04 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

March 17, 2006Weldon: Bin Laden Dead

Pennsylvania Congressman Curt Weldon is claiming that Osama bin Laden died in Iran.

Rep. Curt Weldon, who broke the Able Danger story last year revealing that military intelligence had identified lead hijacker Mohamed Atta as a terrorist threat before the 9/11 attacks, now says that Osama bin Laden has died.

Weldon made the stunning claim during an interview Wednesday with the Philadelphia Inquirer, which reported: "Weldon is making explosive new allegations. He says a high-level source has told him that terrorist leader Osama bin Laden has died in Iran, where he has been in hiding."
Weldon cited as his source an Iranian exile code-named Ali, telling the paper:
"Ali's told me that Osama bin Laden is dead. He died in Iran."

Declassified doc Iraq show 3,000 Saudi and Iraqi mujihideen
LauraMansfield.com

March 17, 2006: Declassified documents from Iraq show 3,000 Saudi and Iraqi mujihideen depart Iraq in Nov 2001 to fight US in Afghanistan

The newly declassified documents shed more and more light on the evolution of the violent insurgency in Iraq, and show that Saddam Hussein’s government was aware not just of the presence of Al Qaeda terrorist Abu Mus’ab Al Zarqawi, but also was aware that the Anbar province in Iraq was being used as a launch point for organized groups of jihadis headed to fight the United States in Afghanistan.

TRAIL OF TERROR
Newly released document links Saddam to al-Qaida
Indicates regime was cooperating with bin Laden group to strike U.S.

Among the first batch of the thousands expected to be declassified over the next several months, the Al Mukabarat document was translated from the original Arabic (((by a contributor to the online forum Free Republic. )))

(((Laura Mansfield, an independent Middle East analyst, examined the translation for WorldNetDaily and said it appears to be accurate. )))

Was mysterious sound result of supersonic jet flight?

PORTLAND, Ore. - The source of those mysterious rumblings over the weekend that caught the attention of so many continues to be a mystery, although there is a focus on a potential answer.

The focus is on F-15s at the Portland Air Base, which KATU News was originally told were on the ground, but we later learned were not.

It turns out a group of F-15s were launched from the Portland International Airport Saturday night as part of three days of intensive training.

Our Dear friend sent me this and I wanted to share it with TM, one of our own 'hunters'

GOOD-BYE PHANTOM

So goodbye, Big Fighter, blessed protector of the American way and our hides. We who knew you well will miss your class, your swagger, your raw power. Even in the face of technological advances you bowed to no other. Thanks for the memories. They are indeed the stuff of novels.

From Nena:

This story is very special to my heart. If I had discovered fighters before I was 38 - in particular the F-4, I would not have had 4 kids (which I had at the time)....I would have been the first female fighter pilot - bar none . It would have been me or the Air Force.

I have yet to return from my first flight in the F-4D in 1986....and managed to log another 16 hours in fighters, 36 hours in the Sim and sat though 300 fighter geometry and academic hours to the point where I almost hated Charlie Salie....

For those of you who do not know, I am the only female (US and Mexican) civilian pilot (who freely used my USAF CAP credentials) to fly 7 no-shit sorties in modern fighters; F-4D (A/G, A/A, DACT), A-7 (LANA & night refueling), F-16B (A/A, DACT, Live ordanance 500 lbs with snake eaters lasing the targets), and F/A-18 "E" solo ride with Blue angels with no G-suit. Not to mention legally becoming a tailhooker and another 100's of hours in WW II trainers and fighters.....both US and foreign.....

I also managed stints on operational US Carriers and a few TDY's to Tyndall (ACMIs), RoseyRoads, Coldlake, Howard AFB and a few other hot areas in the 80's and 90's.....

I got my chamber and altitude card to 37,000...and my ejection card....went through the centrifuge....and kept absolutely quiet when I broke my foot the day before I was to fly an F16 in ColdLake....I thought I would get caught with the pain searing through me during egress refresher....but nobody noticed my green-pained face! So, I flew! Went home and wore a cast for 6 weeks!

I was lucky to learn all this BEFORE our military became politically correct...so I experienced the best of deseased insects, carrier landings, Misty & River Rat reunions, and many of the lost arts of the playful activities of the Right Stuff Guys who knew how to wash down each (good and bad) day.

The Phantom is my first love.....My only regret was that I was not able to fly one to the boneyard......

Maybe - Someday, I'll finish my book; Pure Pursuit.....Brassey's contracted it in '89, but when the US went in to take Noriega out (my story line in 90), they asked me if I could change the plot a bit....(history was catching up to my writing). So, I moved the story to Nicaragua where I put in a female president. Lo and behold that came true, and when Brasseys asked me again to change the story to a future possiblity - I said I needed more money - they said no.

Thus, "Pure Pursuit" sits enclosed in data bits of 3 1/2 floppy disks that may never be translated from Multimate to Word Doc format! Nena

But - what a wonderful 20 years I've had as a fighter pilot since then!

Proud to call her Friend

Port security test containers due back to Port Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) _ More than a dozen cargo containers, part of a program testing new technology to help safeguard ports, were expected to return Friday night to Port Newark.

The containers, carrying paper products, were expected to arrive at the container terminal about 11 p.m., said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the port.

The 15 containers left Germany on Feb. 28 as part of a U.S. Department of Homeland Security pilot program.

Afghan, Coalition Troops Detain Suspects, Seize Weapons

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 17, 2006 – Afghan and coalition troops detained several suspects and seized weapons during two March 15 operations in Afghanistan, Combined Forces Command Afghanistan officials reported.
A joint patrol detained nine armed men in the village of Khwazi in Qalat district, Zabul province after they were seen running into a mosque with weapons. Afghan National Army soldiers ordered the armed men out of the mosque. When they refused to leave, the patrol received permission from the mullah to enter and search the building. The men, who are suspected of being Taliban, were detained without incident. Coalition forces remained outside the mosque as a sign of respect, officials said.

Escorted by the mullah on a search of the mosque, the Afghan soldiers recovered assault rifles, ammunition magazines, a 9 mm pistol with ammunition, hand grenades, blasting caps and wires.

Lt. Col. Frank Sturuk, commander of the coalition's Task Force Warrior, commended the professionalism of the Afghan soldiers. "Taliban who choose to operate in Zabul province can expect to be identified and captured," he said. "Afghan and coalition forces won't allow Zabul to become a sanctuary for Taliban."

In Nangarhar province the same day, Afghan and coalition forces collected four weapon caches and disarmed several anti-personnel mines.

In Jalalabad, provincial coordination center officials turned in 10 mortar rounds to Afghan National Police officers. The cache will remain in Afghan police custody until coalition forces can dispose of it.

Elsewhere in the province, members of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines discovered two improvised explosive devices in a house and five land mines buried around the house in the vicinity of Kandy Bagh village in the Charparhar district.

Afghan police officers and Afghan National Army soldiers, supported by members of the Jalalabad Provincial Reconstruction Team, also discovered a land mine while conducting a combat patrol near the Bati Kot District Center.

"Land mines and other munitions are incredibly dangerous, indiscriminate killers," said Army Lt. Col. Paul Fitzpatrick, spokesman the coalition's Combined Joint Task Force 76. "Mines can and do kill innocent people. The emplacement of mines in a village populated with innocent civilians only increases the chance that it will maim -- or worse, kill -- Afghan citizens that are simply going about their day-to-day lives."

By using land mines, insurgents are seeking to terrorize and break the will of the Afghan people, he continued. But, the Afghan people, the Afghan National Security Forces and the coalition will not be deterred from building a democratic society based on the rule of law, he said.

Jihad in New Mexico?

"'Terror threat' hits NMSU," from the Las Cruces Sun-News, with thanks to Dr. A:

What the FBI called "a possible terrorist threat" forced the evacuation Thursday of most of New Mexico State University during midterm examinations.
A similar call to the Sun-News also led to an evacuation of workers and a lockdown of nearby Central Elementary School.

No explosives were found in either location.

A man with an Arab accent called the NMSU president's office and the newspaper about 8 a.m. and said a bomb was going to explode on campus. The caller to the Sun-News also made a threat against the newspaper.

The FBI is heading the investigation because the caller to the Sun-News said "they were going to blow (the university) up as high as the heavens, so people will know that al-Qaida lives on," according to a Sun-News receptionist who took the call.

The caller to the president's office said the bomb would explode at 9:30 a.m. "in honor of" something, but the man spoke rapidly and his words were unintelligible, NMSU attorney Bruce Kite said.
