But even if you think there's going to be absolutely no blowback from today's events, you're smoking some great rope.

The US Navy has "LONGTERM contracts" for Dubai. The blowback, if the UAE really wants to dork with the US is..train, maintain and fly your $15 billion dollar F-16's on your own, ditto with the UAE's 30 US-supplied AH-64A Apache attack helicopters. And yea, break your deal on the ports.....dare you.

America is the sole superpower in the world for a reason, and it had NOTHING to do with little oil-rich dictatorships in the mid-east.

This whole thing about reprisal by Dubai is way off the mark IMHO. Take a look at a map and you will see Iran right across the Strait of Hormuz from the UAE. Every nation on the Arabian Peninsula has a vested interest in keeping the USA happy. I expect some SMALL retaliation but nothing big.
The threat of Iran and our protrection is very important to the UAE. This whole thing is blown way out of proportion.

I take that to mean that no American company could finance the deal and therefore the American taxpayer will now be subsidizing some USA company to take over.

I agree with your take on the outcome. The reasons no American companies have bid on these leases are; high tax burdens, burdensome regulations (enviro-wacko and others), union problems and egregious tort law. All of which do not effect foreign companies, at least to the extent they would an American company. Congress made these laws and regs and aren't about to reverse them.

So, you're right. One way or the other Congress will have the taxpayer make up the slack. It will be far less efficient so it will cost more than DPW would have spent. There will be new layers of bureaucracy so security will ultimately be lower.

So you obviously aren't interested in facts as to why so many people were against the deal. The people spoke and government listened - isn't that the way it is supposed to work?

I was interested in the facts and I found out the facts before I formed my opinion. "The people" went into hysterics without hearing the facts and certain people in Congress who care more about staying in office than guarding our country's best interest took a chance to make a purely political grandstand.

You can look at the polls taken right here at Free Republic and see that the first emotional reaction to the deal was negative, but after the facts were attained there were many more people who supported it.

That would be good. Also, Bechtel or Fluor might be interesting.

The bolded part seems to be the sum total of the antis facts. And, no, that's not how it's supposed to work in a republic. A democracy maybe. Or a commune.

But today's globalists are actually intimidated about the prospect - O... M....G.... - that we might piss off some overblown city state. With will like that, we are really a pathetic thing to behold. No Great White Fleets in our future ...

And neither is setting up bases in the UAE. That will give Islamic radicals more evidence of U.S. encroachment in the Arab world, and hence more reason to launch terrorist attacks against the U.S.

This is amazing logic! Defending alliances, projecting power and asserting our right to do so is the cause of terrorism!? "It's all our fault!" "We made them do it!" I've heard this line somewhere before.

Precisely. It's OK to PO France, those dirty leftist FROGS (with nukes). And it's OK to PO Russia, those filthy commies (with nukes). And it's OK to PO Germany, those back stabbing, money grabbing youths of Hitler (that house our nukes).

But don't PO the arabs in DUBAI!!!!!! WE'RE DOOMED!!!!!!

...started under Poppy Bush. Up till then we used the PI's or Down Under for most WEST PAC needs including yard work.

And you see no major changes in geo-politics since then? OK.

The article is from March 9, 2000....I thought it was rather prophetic. Iran is rattling the nuke saber for everything it's worth....and good to see you posting.....(Snake Pliston....I thought you were dead!).

NOTE : The following post does not apply to
those FReepers who are
1) Active Duty
2) Those with disabilities
3) Care givers of those with disabilities
4) Those with financial hardships
5) Those who actually support our troops in other ways.

IF people REALLY cared, they would get away from the computer and actually do something,
in the real world, to actually assist the Coast Guard.

I've done it each and every week,
often more than once a week,
since Oct 2001

I don't receive a dime and even pay for my own uniforms.

The choice is either "listen" to all the pros and cons
or actually be part of the solution.

PS You'll have to leave your "politics"
at the door while you wear the uniform.

You're talking about HARDWARE. Why do you think the guys in charge of OUR hardware (Franks, Pace and Rumsfeld) have been so OUTSPOKEN in support of the UAE? And beyond hardware, what about INTEL? They (and the other Arab moderates) know things that our Spec Ops folks could NEVER find out on their own. So even if there's no tangible change in the hardware, do you think the intel pipeline will be the same as before? I rather doubt it.

It's an Islamic state. Islam is radically opposed to us. The UAE has produced radical Islamic terrorists who have killed Americans and would like to kill more. I think it was perfectly reasonable to want more assurances on this point. That said, I think Congress' action was stupid and just a bit of grandstanding.

What kind of idiotic reasoning is that? So if you cut somebody off in traffic and they honk their horn at you, you were right to cut them off?

Thanks at least for that though it's a whale of an understatement. When you say the UAE has produced terrorists that makes it sound like the government there was behind it. Is that your take on the three terrorists from Ohio or the cell in Buffalo, NY?

"The U.S.A. has produced terrorists."
