TAMPA - Before David Kelley went to Iraq, he bought his wife a "Support Our Troops" sign to display outside the couple's home in the Westchase subdivision.
When Kelley, an Army private, went overseas in November, Stacey Kelley posted the sign outside their home. For her, the sign is a daily reminder of the sacrifice her husband and fellow soldiers are making.
But officials of Westchase, in northwest Hillsborough County, view the sign differently. They say the 2-foot-high sign violates community rules. Stacey Kelley, 24, received a letter from the homeowners association last month stating she could be fined $100 a day if she does not remove the sign.

Reason #5,469 as to why we will NEVER live in a development...
I would gladly pay any fine that this military family incurs.
Does somebody here have any contacts with the Governor.
This Anti-American/ Troops crap has got to stop.
Oh brother...here we go again. How many freepers are going to express how evil this HOA is because they will not allow the homeowner to VIOLATE a covenant rule that the homeowner SIGNED.
Hear! Hear!
Exactly. Sounds like they didn't read the rental agreement. Hand the sign in the window and be done with it. And on that note...
"It's ridiculous that no one can even show their support."
Nobody is stopping you from showing your support sweetie. They are just stopping you from violating a rule that has been in place long before trendy signs become vogue.
There are many other ways to show support for the troops than slapping a magnet on the back of your car and calling it a day. Go volunteer with the USO, if you live near an airport, find out if they have a USO lounge for soldiers passing thru on their way home. Contact your local VA and see if there are any programs to help all vets. It's real popular to support the active ones we have now, but lets not forget the brave men who have fought before.
Give 'em what for dangerous one. ;)
Yep, these same covenants keep those sillouettes of the ladies bent over the garden, flamingos, plastic geese and cars up on blocks out of the development. If people don't like living by the rules, live somewhere without them. And, like you said, there are other ways to show support for our troops that really matter.
What's wrong with pink flamingo's? /sarc

This stuff gets tiresome, when I heard my flag making loud pops in the wind 17' from the apt. windows of my neighbors, I took it down myself, even though no one said a word. Patriotism doesn't give legitimacy to every thing.
Umm, it is not anti-American. It is the rules of the homeowners association. If she doesn't like it, she can move.
The Associations have been loosing there power during the last few years in Florida...Every once in while they need to be slapped down a bit. However they do some good in keeping the neighborhood clean but more often then not they fail.
Since they are in Tampa, the Association have to consider rethinking their position
BUMP FOR TROOPS SIGN!!!!!
The first year I moved into this HOA, I put a BUSH sign INSIDE my window facing the street. It was a small one they hand out for free.... I got a notice in two days to take it down.....
