Governor: Steroids hard to halt

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger conceded Sunday that getting drugs out of the bodybuilding sport he loves so dearly will be close to impossible.

"I think it's very challenging to really bust people," he said. "Sometimes you do, but it's a rarity. Because you know when you look at the performances, no matter what sport it is, people take something. But to detect it is really the other question."

The Republican governor's comments came at the end of his three-day trip here to preside over the annual Arnold Sports Festival.

---snip--

Schwarzenegger is not a purist and his position on sports drugs sometimes seems contradictory.

It's been widely reported that he used steroids, then legal, when he began training for bodybuilding fame as a teenager in Austria. His publicist was once quoted as saying he ceased using them in the 1970s.

Sunday morning, a mostly male crowd of several hundred paid $50 apiece to attend an Arnold Classic training seminar at which Schwarzenegger spoke for about 45 minutes.

One of the questions came from a worried father whose 15-year-old son had been lifting weights for three years. The father wanted to know what supplements would be OK for kids.

"I think we have to be very careful to teach our kids not to rely on anything with steroids base or take steroids or any kind of enhancement like that," the governor replied.

But in his rambling five-minute answer, Schwarzenegger didn't completely denounce steroids, either.

He said he recognized that there are some "addicts" in the sport who still use them, saying that's probably all right as long as they are adults and "as long as they know there are risks involved."

Horsesh*t.

At the end of his presentation, Schwarzenegger pledged never to stop promoting bodybuilding. "It is really fantastic," he said. "But the key thing is that we keep fighting drugs so that it is truly body building rather than body destroying."

The new threat to bodybuilding, the one that will finally knock it out once it becomes widely known, are the group of products generally known as "Synthol." These are oils injected into the muscle to inflate it just like the lip injections Hollywood actresses get. Most of the top bodybuilders use them to eliminate their weak spots. Once their use becomes known to the general public the freak show of competitive bodybuilding won't be able to even pretend to be a sport. The guy whose name is most associated with synthol abuse is a freak named Gregg Valentino, whom bodybuilders hate in large part because he inadvertently exposes this fraud. He does what they do but to an extreme level.
