All in for Arnold

At the Republican convention in San Jose last weekend, conservatives tried to mildly chasten Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for his more-liberal policies, but they were turned back by a Republican majority more interested in winning elections and putting up a facade of unity than in making a stand for principle. I'm saddened by what the failed revolt means for the Grand Old Party. The Republican Party is far from perfect, but if it doesn't stand up for limiting government, then those ideas will have no prominent place in the governing debate.

Until the November special election, the governor had done a surprisingly good job at promoting conservative ideals. But since the devastating loss in the special election, the governor has done a quick about-face, embracing so many Democratic policies that he has received high praise from leading Democrats. When I see him on TV, I start humming that old folk song, "Blowing in the Wind."

Isn't the Republican base right to speak out at its own convention? Pulling the pre-primary endorsement went too far, but it was traded away to gain a fair hearing for several resolutions that were critical of the governor's specific policies. Supposedly party leaders agreed to let the other resolutions get debated on the floor of the general assembly. But the resolution committee merged all the budget-related resolutions into one resolution, then sent it to the assembly with a recommendation for a "no" vote.

The convention certainly showcased the ability of a powerful personality to lead a party - in this case, on a detour. Sure, the eventual Democratic candidate, Phil Angelides or Steve Westly, would be far worse than Schwarzenegger. But if that's good enough reason for the GOP to abandon its philosophy, then this state really is in for a period of trouble.

Before the Rnoids descend.

Rnoids are fun. They keep Freepers enegized and on their toes.

Think of how boring the California Topic might be, with conservatives bobbing around in a vast sea of blue, were it not for Rniods, motoring by to shove fishing gaffs in our face, hoping that conservatives might give up and quit treading water.

They're electing a governor -- they're not electing God.

One has to choose the best of the alternatives -- and if they are totally unsatisfactory, one has to consider running himself. But this expectation that somebody is going to do everything for oneself is the worst entitlement mentality of all -- and is totally unworthy of Republican thinking!

That's why there is the Democratic Party -- who tell them what they want to hear, with no expectations that a reasonable person would ever expect them to deliver. They just like being deceived.

Let's just be sure everyone understands who has the high ground on principle in this matter.

If you oppose the GOP candidate, you are advancing the cause of the leftward most candidate who is viable. That is an action consciously taken to condemn your own family and neighbors to life under the more leftward of the viable options available. That's something a true conservative would find difficult to live with looking in the mirror.

When you vote for the most rightward candidate available who is viable, your principles are impeccable.

Duuuuude. Pass me a bottle of what you're drinkin'. I got to check that stuff out. lol

Just goes to show what enough glitter on a pile of poop , folks'll flock to see it for the thrill alone.

That's why a lot of folks visit California and go away experts. Lord knows, there are a lot of piles with glitter on them across this state.

I find it fascinating that it now takes the services of abonarfied conservative Republican like Tom to be asked to help sell the snake oil when we all know lizard juice will work just as well to get the job done and a lot cheaper.

Besides, good things sell themselves. We are not witnessing a good thing and I definitely ain't buyin'.

Obviously also a majority opinion within the CRP leadership. Self reliance is out. The government, nanny state is in.

Build those roads in SoCal. Tote that water bucket in San Diego. Erect those houses for illegal aliens in LA. Bend to the yoke. Never question the political gentry. Be patient and toil in silence. Your turn will come on the government dole if you serve your Republican master without question.

Those pesky little facts. In this case the leftward most candidate who is viable is , in fact, Schwarzenegger.

So what to do? I'd suggest the answer lays in a simple, pragmatic, political truth:

It is impossible to advance conservatism by voting for a liberal.

The loudest complainers are always these people who never contribute a dime to the party, cause or the Free Republic -- but demand that everybody else live to their expectations of what everybody else has to do for them, threatening to withhold their good graces, vast fortunes, and influence for those reasons.

What do they think this place is -- the Democratic Underground?

"and here we are, deeper in debt"..

"Another day older and deeper in debt". "I owe my soul to the company store".

When a new governor gets into office, as in this case, he is sometimes saddled with a huge debt run up by previous administrations. In order to pay the debt and to keep the government running, taxes must be raised just to stay afloat. Campaign promises become impossible to keep given the gravity of the situation.

That said, there is no excuse for NOT cutting back on government employees, government programs and government spending.

Every politician wants to look like a hero to the people by giving them things and the things politicians give people are other people's money.

How to stop it, I haven't a clue. Thus it has always been, thus it will always be.

The last time I checked, there's no dearth of whining and complaining -- as though that was the critical lack and need in American society, as their only contribution.

They're running it 24/7 on the public access channels now -- along with all those "professional" talking fatheads as their role models.

Voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil. I see no impeccable principles in that.

An equally good argument can be made that those posting on this forum, apparently representing the CRP, are, in fact, liberals, attempting to widen the schism between resident conservatives and the left leaning CRP. Magnifying that natural schism would assure that the leftward trend in California Republican politics is continued by giving the CRP a rebutable presumption that principled, conservative ideologues. not the CRP's ideological capitulation, resulted in loss after loss.

The eventual Democratic candidate would be far worse than Schwarzenegger, but if that's good enough reason for the GOP to abandon its philosophy, then this state really is in for a period of trouble.
