Consider me clueless.

Why isn't this a case of illegal search and seizure?

"Another student apparently became aware that the boys had brought the rifles to school and told an assistant principal, who searched the boys’ truck and found the firearms."

I wonder if a search warrant was involved, or was this a warrantless domestic spying search?

hmmm. Due process? I don't think so.

I graduated in 1988. One the Friday before the opening weekend there were so many trucks ready to go hunting we could have held a gun show in the parking lot.

On the one hand, you would hope the school would know better, and that a rifle locked up out of sight in a vehicle is not the next Columbine.

On the other, you would hope the student would have the sense to realize that schools are insane, and of course they don't know better.

That was a reeely reeely dangerous situation and mayhem and murder were just barely avoided. Those guns were just waiting for some innocent student to walk by the vehicle so they could leap up out of their resting places and shoot her. The rifles were probably awaiting an opportune time to fire through the school windows to mow down an entire English class.

More senseless zero-tolerance horse manure! You can thank Klebold and Harris (hope the AC's working, a$$holes!) for their little stints. I bet these boys will be found to be upstanding young men with no records of mischief and intent on helping one another to repair or clean or hunt with their rifles. The fact that they were unloaded and in a locked container indicates to me that they had no intent to shoot up the school. May I eat my socks if things are found to the contrary.

And oh yeah, thanks a LOT Clintoon for your non-sensical anti-gun laws that still plague us today.

When was the last time a hunting rifle locked in a toolbox harmed anyone? It would help to know if these boys had any track record of abnormal behavior or violence. If they're just a couple of normal good kids that like to do a little hunting, I think the school and law enforcement officials were way out of line.

Hunting rifles in tool boxes. Big deal.

I live in a very rural area where lots of people hunt and almost every one owns guns. We used to take hunting rifles to school in plain view in the gun racks mounted in our pickup trucks.

And guess what? There was no gun violence then. When will stupid libs understand that the gins themselves aren't the problem?

How do you "find" anything in a locked box?

Find out who ratter is.

"I loaned those rifles to (ratter) the day before, and I gave him a duplicate key to my toolbox a while back so he could keep things in my toolbox. My friends can verify this. I really liked the guy - why he would try to frame me I'll never know. See? The guy ratted on me, so he couldn't have been a real friend could he? He sure had me fooled."

A little forethought goes a long way.

WOW!! Hunting rifles in a car!!

If they only had some pot or hard-core pron, they wouldn't be in trouble (Sarcasm)

When I was in school, kids got opening day off to go deer hunting - so did some teachers.

This is institutional insanity. The kids are also not real astute.

dammit! Another fine old southern tradition under attack. How will boys go straight from school to the deer lease when the season is in? They'll have to waste valuable time going home to get their guns.

The first long arms I ever handled were inside a junior high classroom...
we couldn't graduate until we'd fired a shotgun at clay targets on the football field...
and I'm under 40 years old.

Way back when I was in high school 1961-64, if a student brought a rifle, pistol or hunting knife to school, it meant either hunting season was starting or the student was in leathercraft class. No panics in those days although we often heard of shootings or knifings at some other school always far, far away.

My uncle walked to high school in NYC in the mid-1960's carrying a rifle over his shoulder, and stored it in his locker, as did the rest of the members of his his school rifle team.

WTF is happening to this country that these kids could be treated this way?
