Iran's Revolutionary Guards are making preparations for a massive assault on U.S. naval forces and international shipping in the Persian Gulf, according to a former Iranian intelligence officer who defected to the West in 2001.
The plans, which include the use of bottom-tethered mines potentially capable of destroying U.S. aircraft carriers, were designed to counter a U.S. land invasion and to close the Strait of Hormuz, the defector said in a phone interview from his home in Europe.
They would also be triggered if the United States or Israel launched a pre-emptive strike on Iran to knock out nuclear and missile facilities.
"The plan is to stop trade," the source said.
Between 15 and 16.5 million barrels of oil transit the Strait of Hormuz each day, roughly 20 percent of the world's daily oil production, according to the U.S. government's Energy Information Administration.

It's well-known that Iran would attempt to shut the Strait of Hormuz in any war with the United States. In fact, it would be absurd to think that they did not have such plans readied since years ago. If anything, this isn't news because everyone already knows it, not because it's five years old.
I've got pretty valid reasons for wanting Iran to exercise some caution. ;-)
They've been planning this and lining the Strait with anti ship missiles for decades.

On the other hand, Iran is well-positioned to cause trouble in the Straight of Hormuz.
About the only hope we really have to stop them is that we have a strong ally on the other shore of the strait, which should make it much easier to defend.
That ally? -- United Arab Emerites, the current Democrat whipping-boy. If the democrats successfully define UAE as our enemy, and we lose their support, we could be in trouble
