CAPE CANAVERAL - A spacewalking Russian cosmonaut plans to hit a golf shot outside the International Space Station this summer as part of a publicity campaign that already has raised safety concerns.

Clad in a cumbersome spacesuit and anchored to a specially designed tee box, Pavel Vinogradov will hit a six-iron drive along side the station's Russian segment, taking great care not to hook the ball into the outpost.

This is just sheer idiocy! The Russians are turning the space program into a circus show.

At least they could have used a tethered ball or a paper ball...

Boy, will it be funny if he hooks it into the solar panels...

I wonder... A golf ball shouldn't be able to "hook" in any direction in space. It should continue to head in a straight line.... gravity permitting.

He might pull it into the panels, but it takes the friction of air to hook it...

Air or no air, I'll bet I could slice a drive in space.

And if there is any other planet in our galaxy with liquid water on it, my ball will find it.

I wonder if he asked Alan Shepard which club to hit.

Didn't he also hit a six iron?

Incidently, most of the funding for Clinton's useless ISS is, of course, coming from the United States. Meanwhile, the Chinese are headed to the moon.

Some of us have known for a long time that the ISS is nothing more than an extremely expensive make-work project.

True...but he could come over the top and snap it to the left (assuming he's right handed). It just won't go left and then hook farther left...;-)

Can we get Gary McCord or David Fehrety to call this one?

"But when the work was finished, Shepard pulled out two golf balls and unfolded a collapsible golf club specially made for the occasion. Despite thick gloves and a stiff suit that forced him to swing the club with one hand only, he became the first ever to hit golf shots on the moon."

So far this is all I've found.

Seems like I read something a while back that said a pitcher couldn't thow a good curveball on Mars due to the low gravity and air pressure. Stands to reason that the lack of those requirements would be even more pronounced in space.

Idiocy indeed. He should be man enough to hit a driver rather than lay it up with a short iron.

"Shepard produced a makeshift six-iron and two balls, which he whacked successfully."

You are correct.
