(AP) - Former United Nations ambassador and Atlanta mayor Andrew Young will be the public spokesman for a group organized with backing from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. that defends the world's largest retailer against mounting attacks from its critics.

Working Families for Wal-Mart, a group of community leaders from across the country, was set to announce Monday that Young will be the chairman of its 16 member steering committee formed in December to counter charges from two union-backed groups that are pressuring Wal-Mart to improve wages and benefits.

Andrew Young is a well-known liberal. I'm surprised he's going to defend Walmart in the face of the Left's onslaught. Good luck on his mission - he will need it in view of what he's gonna face out there.

I suspect the price was right.

. . . Andrew Young will be the public spokesman . . .

Popcorn, please.

Should be cool to watch the pro-Walmart FReepers wake up this morning to see who is cuddled up in bed with them.

Knock me over with a feather!

From what I have heard about the guy over the past ~25 years, I'd have expected him to be on the opposite side of the issue.....

Unless, perhaps, he is really just defending China's biggest single retail 'trading partner'.

For a minute I was unsure of my recollection... That 'young andy' wasn't the flaming leftist dictator lover I thought he was.....

But since y'all agree that he is a lefty, I'm reassured.

I'm even more convinced that he is doing this much more for China than for WallyWorld.

I can't believe Jessy Jackson let this one slip by . He must have been too busy pushing Coke or GM for more money.

Morning GSGOP,
Nice to see he graduated from Mount Eagle, secrets of his past along with another marxists leader.

I wonder what pecuniary intersts will line his pocket's** "when the ship finally arrives in the harbor."**

I grew tired of that conjured liberal phrase, "at the end of the day.

So the promulagation of, "When the ship finally arrives in the harbor." was necessary.

Andy does nothing for free, never has and never will.

He also showed up leading a black delegation to put their foot down when dems starting bashing Condi at confirmation hearings. They were not going to put up with that. She was qualified, they said.

"Should be cool to watch the pro-Walmart FReepers ..."

It's not that we're pro-Wal-Mart; we're pro-BUSINESS and pro-PROPERTY RIGHTS and Anti-Government trying to regulate people and their businesses. Big difference, but one that is always lost on the business-bashers. I'd defend Target or Shopko or KMart if they were under siege by the union pukes, too. Some sectors of our business base are already a lost cause due to the destructive unionists; Big Auto, the Airlines, etc. Should we just stand by and watch as Big Retailers and then Big Food are taken down the same path? I think not.

I survived being in the military under siege by the Anti-Military Clintons. I can deal with something as minor as a liberal speaking out for Big Business. :)

Dr. Walter Williams can help you educate yourself about how the American economy works and how government regulation and union interference can harm it:

Hey!

Looks like some good reading.  Thanks.  Truly :-)

(But I'm in the thread to watch the show and munch popcorn.  Thought there would be more reaction to the article.)

"Young, himself a former union organizer, said he decided to get involved because he believed much of the criticism levied at Wal-Mart by unions was one-sided and wrong. "The union position is talking about the redistribution of wealth, but they're not talking about generating new wealth. Wal-Mart is generating new wealth when it comes in," he said. "The pluses outweigh the minuses. They do give benefits, they do have health insurance."

He is absolutely right.
