Beijing - A Chinese orphanage director and nine others have been found guilty of buying and selling scores of infants, later adopted by foreign parents.

China's official Xinhua news agency said another 22 officials were fired in the trafficking case in the southern city of Hengyang, Hunan province.

Chinese police say the traffickers bought children who had been abducted from their families and sold them to welfare homes in Hengyang for about 4 000 yuan (R3 800) each.

The social welfare homes then had the infants adopted by foreigners who made "donations" for the adoptions.

The trade continued from 2002 to 2005. Xinhua reports the trafficking of 78 babies in 2005.

That would certainly be nice, but considering China's track record on human rights as well as abortion and the general lack of value given to human life there, I will not hold my breath.

I sincerely hope that I will be proven completely wrong and they will do a mammoth investigation and fully prosecute all concerned

So basically if you listened to Sally Struthers and were guilted into donating money, then you were very possibly funding the trafficing of stolen infants.

But surely Bono knows what he's doing, pouring billions into Africa...

Adoption brokers?  Parents?  Both?

Further north in Mongolia a few years back, friends with the Foreign Service adopted an orphan girl.  Not sure that any money changed hands, but I really wouldn't be surprised if there had been.

If there was some kind of irregularity, I can't imagine those caring parents being prosecuted for anything.  So, I think you must have something more specific in mind.

Being an adoptive parent that has two daughters from China. There isn't any way that the children will ever be reunited at this point. The process is final! However, that being said, the system has to have transparency across the board to keep this from happening in the first place.

My experience is that many people in China know that a child adopted by a western family will be better off living outside China. This doesn't excuse child stealing or selling that probably occurred in this case.

One last thing, my youngest daughter is from Hengnan but not from the orphanage in question.
