Speech angers Australian Muslims [The Truth Hurts Alert]
BBC ^ | Feb. 24, 2006 | Phil Mercer

A senior member of Australia's government has suggested Muslims who do not uphold the country's values should be stripped of their citizenship.

Remarks by Finance Minister Peter Costello, at a conference in Sydney, have sparked anger among leaders of Australia's Islamic community.

They have insisted his comments were divisive and inflammatory.

Mr Costello said migrants who did not respect Australia's laws and traditions should lose their citizenship.

He singled out the Muslim community and said it had a responsibility to uphold Australian values.

He insisted those people that did not were no longer welcome.

Tensions simmering

Mr Costello said his remarks were directed at a "small radical minority" and that his message had to be "clear and unequivocal".

His speech comes at a time when racial tensions here are still simmering after the disturbances in Sydney last December.

Following an assault on two white coastguards, attacks by white gangs on people of Middle Eastern appearance sparked a bloody feud with young Lebanese Australians.

Islamic leaders have accused Peter Costello of deliberately whipping up more fear and religious hatred.

They have claimed it is further evidence that the government is no longer committed to multi-culturalism.

There has been support for the treasurer's position from Pauline Hanson.

The former right wing politician caused uproar a decade ago when she insisted that Australia was in danger of being overrun by migrants from Asia.

There has been backing too for Mr Costello from his boss, the prime minister.

John Howard was criticised earlier this week for controversial remarks he made about Muslims.

The veteran leader said he was convinced that migrants with extreme views were intent on committing violence here in the name of Islam.

There they go again, the pots calling the kettle black.

So there's hope then.

None of is unreasonable, it is the same standard as for everybody else. Their bigotry is showing again, better than everybody that isn't muslim. This all grows so very tiresome.

Is there any way we can get Mr. Costello on the ballot in the United States?

If the Islamists don't like what Australia represents, they're free to pack their bags and leave. There's nothing special about Australia's attitude towards Muslim immigrants. Its a question of how they adapt to the Aussie way of life.

The Aussies get it. I wish some American politicians would come out and speak the truth that if you want to immigrate to a country you better be willing to uphold its values. You can't just expect them to change for you. If you want sharia law, stay in Saudi Arabia.

The slims seem to think it's OK for them to commit all kinds of violence against anyone they feel like, but if anyone objects then that person is preaching hate.

Reminds me of a POTUS we had not long ago.

Following an assault on two white coastguards,...

Nice PC here. They did not tell the whole story, which was that two white female lifeguards were serially raped by a pack of middle eastern men, which ignited the whole mess.

"They have claimed it is further evidence that the government is no longer committed to multi-culturalism."

Uncivilized culture is incompatable with the mainstream of the civilized world. Culture that promotes violence and death to those who resist their beliefs and speak out against their nonsense indeed should be stripped of citizenship. Good citizens of any nation work for the well being and betterment of the nation, rather than being divisive and promoting violence.

Good work Aussies! Be a model and prove our politically correct approach to appeasement of Muslims is a policy of disaster for America if continued.

"...sparked a bloody feud with young Lebanese Australians."

Are they Lebanese or are they Australians? I urge any and all Australians to put an end to this garbage before you start getting hyphenated Australians. Those hyphens stick like glue and are near impossible to get rid of.

Could anyone define Islam any better?

Looks like the Australians, and to some extent the Europeans are starting to get it. Borders, language, and culture must be preserved for a country to retain its identity and, ultimately, to exist. Maybe the USA will soon follow. Clearly, neoconservatism has failed the United States and needs to be replaced by a more realistic foreign policy.

Everything that non-muslims do anger muslims and then the non-muslims in power throw their backs out of joint bending over to kiss the muslims asses.

President Bush, please take note of how to handle radicals! When it comes to a religion of peace, I don't want body parts (and pieces) thrown at me. I've voted for you twice now, vote for America with a clue to folks such as these pictured below...

It used to be that immigrants new to a country would swear allegiance to the country, respect the laws , learn the local language, work hard , go to school and in the process become assimilated into their new Country.

Now they get on the the gravy train and whine anbout how they are oppressed and mistreated.
If they pulled this nonsense in their home country they would be punished eternally.
