TREASURER Peter Costello is promoting division and Islamophobia in remarks about Muslims and should be censured, a Muslim community leader said.
Keysar Trad, president of the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia, said today he genuinely hoped Prime Minister John Howard would censure Mr Costello.
Mr Costello delivered a speech yesterday in which he said if people wanted to live under Islamic sharia law, they should move to another country.
"There is one law we are all expected to abide by," the Treasurer said.
"It is the law enacted by the parliament under the Australian constitution.
"If you can't accept that, then you don't accept the fundamentals of what Australia is and what it stands for."
Mr Trad said nobody was protesting Australia's secular laws through any other means than the normal democratic process.
"We have not asked for sharia law to be imposed," he told ABC radio.
"I don't know anyone in this country who is asking for sharia law to be imposed and I don't known anyone in this country who has rejected the rule of law.
"I am genuinely hopeful that the prime minister will censure the treasurer over these ridiculous comments, that the treasurer is grossly out of line.
"Rather than try to promote understanding and harmony in this society, his comments are highly divisive and he is stirring up Islamophobia, and these comments should really be beneath any decent politician."
In his speech, Mr Costello said where there was reason to believe people were not truthfully or honestly meeting their citizenship test, there was every right for them to be denied citizenship.
"If by subsequent conduct they show that they don't meet the test then we could invite them to forfeit their Australian citizenship," he said.
"Now you can only do this if they have another citizenship."
Perhaps they should consider why they are held in such low regard!

A recent poll indicated that 40% of Muslims in Britain would prefer living under Islamic law. I bet it isn't that different in Australia or here for that matter.

Muslims don't need any help in promoting division and Islamophobia. They do a great job all by themselves. I'm hoping the Aussies up the ante on this thing and begin forcibly expelling the jihadists. And I hope the US government will take note and follow suite.
