What a shame. He ought to have the right to be an ignoramus if he wants. And might I ask what "You're dead, and we're glad. Rest in pieces, witch" means?

I'm not sure I buy this. I don't see how the reaction to him (IE let's chuck him in the can for being an obnoxious jerk) is very much preferable to the reaction of Norwegian Muslims to the Mohammad Cartoons.
The Norwegian Muslims called for the editor to be put in jail for "his own protection", because "they were not sure they could control the anger" over the cartoons.
I see censorship as censorship. I'm fully in favor of stating this man is as stupid as Pat Buchanan for engaging in holocaust denial. But to put him in jail for his beliefs, wrong answer.

It will be interesting to see which 'journalists' who have spoken out against his sentence, and the Holocaust law in general will have to say regarding the impeding--I really hope I'm wrong-- Islam powered Blasphemy law.
While many on this baord blast this law, Europe has its reasons for having this law. They want to make sure an important part of its past is not re-written by modern 'historians', and holocaust denial statements are essentially viewed by Europe as hate speech.

I think Irving's sentence is stupid. He is not a threat to anyone.

Irving's expressions of regret were "considered to be mere lip service to the law".
Austria's justice system sounds like it needs an overhaul. They jail a person for his beliefs then say he's a liar when he changes them.

Whatever happened to Free Speech!? I think the guy's statements are repugnant and outright disgusting but I find it more abhorrent to jail him for speaking his mind no matter how offensively ridiculous the statements are. I thought Free Speech laws protected not the speech the public necessary agrees with but the speech that may be unpopular or offensive. What's next- jailing someone for thinking a certain way.

He shouldn't be serving any term at all. He's an author who wrote a book. Who's writings are we going to condemn next?
To: KentTrappedInLiberalSeattle
If this guy can be arrested, Jimmy Carter & Al Gore had better watch out. I didn't know it was against the law to be stupid.

Amazing.
A thread about Free Speech, Austria, Holocaust Denial, and David Irving.
Somehow Pat Buchanan gets mentioned. Strange.
Do you know they are discussing cookie recipes in General Chat AND NO ONE has brought up how much they hate Pat Buchanan?
Better hurry over there.
