I don't know the facts here, and I doubt anyone on FReep does. But if he's really dying, that should be taken into account. White-collar crime shouldn't require you to die in prison. It's just vengeful to do that, and for the most part, only violent criminals are worthy of revenge.

Being a Republican, Mr. Cunningham will probably get the full sentence demanded. Things tend to work that way, it seems.

Being a Republican should have meant that he knew better.

From the article........

Cunningham has admitted using his seat on the powerful House of Representatives Appropriations Committee and its Subcommittee on Defense to accomplish what the government said were contract awards that were "not in the best interests of the country."

You might want to rethink your characterization of his crimes.

As a matter of academic interest, do you include treason in that?

What's really appalling is that Duke potentially draws a long prison sentence for doing something stupid (albeit not violent), but the RINO Governor & Congressman from South Dakota, Bill Janklow, got peanuts for criminally negligent manslaughter.

White collar crime is the worst, I can fight a thug trying to take my $50.00, but I don't stand much of a chance against white collar crooks. When you think of all the precautions and uneasiness you feel everyday about crime, almost all of it is about white collar crime. Paper shredders, computers, insurance, fear of lawyers, pension fears, rip offs at the auto garage, most of our constant state of fear of crime, rarely involves a fear of strong arm tactics.

I would generally disagree. I think it would be fair to say that white collar crimes do not merit a sentence of life in prison (in most cases). Thats not the same as saying someone in poor health should be spared jail if their crime merits it. Now if it could be established that Mr. Cunningham was in fact in the late stages of a terminal illness (as in months or less to live) then I think a Christian might see their way to letting him spend his final days with his family under house arrest. But unless I missed something here thats not what is being claimed. Also if he is as destitute as now being alleged it's actually likely he will get better medical care in prison than on the outside. (Thats a sad comment in itself.)

WTF? Everyone who goes to jail stands a chance of dying there. It's called immortality. Do you have some kind of crystal ball that we can use for these white collar criminals so that we let them out before they die? Maybe, give them their last year of life in freedom.

And age and/or poor health isn't a de facto license to commit a crime.

It's not required. Might happen, though. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

He violated the public trust, plain and simple. He essentially sold his country to the highest bidder for his own personal gain. As a former military offcer, raised on the ideals of service and sacrifice to the Nation, he knew better than that.

As another former military officer, allow me to say that what he did ranks, IMHO, just below treason. Yes, I take it *that* seriously. This isn't some corporate executive taking a bribe - this is an elected representative, a former military officer, selling his country out for a few dollars.

I'm frankly surprised that Duke Cunningham hasn't taken the only honorable option he has left.

It's not a pleasant thing. And I hope Cunningham serves his time and
gets adequate treatment. Heck, the California system give heart transplants
and IIRC sex-changes to inmates.

Serving his time, even with the rough prospect of death will put
any honorable service person returning from our War On Terror to
not go down the same dark path.
