Dubai, 24 January 2006: - Global ports operator DP World today welcomed news that one of its senior executives, Dave Sanborn, has been nominated by US President George W. Bush to serve as Maritime Administrator a key transportation appointment reporting directly to Norman Mineta the Secretary of Transportation and Cabinet Member.

The White House has issued a statement from Washington DC announcing the nomination. The confirmation process will begin in February.

Mr Sanborn currently holds the position of Director of Operations for Europe and Latin America for the Dubai-based company

Mohammed Sharaf, CEO, DP World said: “While we are sorry to lose such an experienced and capable executive, it is exactly those qualities that will make Dave an effective administrator for MarAd. We are proud of Dave’s selection and pleased that the Bush Administration found such a capable executive. We wish him all the best in his new role.”

Ted Bilkey, Chief Operating Officer, DP World said: “Dave’s decades of experience in markets around the world, together with his passion for the industry and commitment to its development, will allow him to make a positive contribution to the work of the Maritime Administration. We wish him well for the future.”

Mr Sanborn, a graduate of The United States Merchant Maritime Academy, joined DP World in 2005. He previously held senior roles with shipping lines CMA-CGM (Americas), APL Ltd and Sea-Land and has been based, besides the US, in Brazil, Europe, Hong Kong and Dubai during his career. He has also served in the US Naval Reserve.

Mr Sanborn is due to take up his new role based in Washington DC later in 2006.

Give port operations to Dubai Ports World, put one of their guys in charge of Maritime Administration. What else is going on in this story we haven't heard yet?

Whoa! First, we hear that DP buys the port facilities from a British company. Now we hear that a DP exec gets a big appointment in the Bush administration.

Again, it's time to start following the money on this one. This has a dank, unpleasant smell about it, I think. Somewhere, there's some rotting flesh.

I think you're stretching this a bit...he worked for a Co. headquartered in an Arab Country. He's an American citizen and he left the job to take the government job.

I don't think it's stretching at all. Guys who work for a company do not end their connection to a company when they take a federal job, for pete's sake.

I don't like this. I don't like this at all.

Yup, there is something terribly wrong here. BTW, does anyone know when P&O got control?

And a slight pay cut, I suspect. He seems well qualified for the job (more than Minetta is).

Uh Mr. Sanborn has worked for many different shipping companies and is a 1973 graduate of the Merchan Marin Academy and has more experience and expertise in the shipping industry than you will ever have..

But you trash him to fill up your little tin foil head, Mr. know it all about shipping.

What a coincidence that DPW gets approved by Bush to operate 6 major US ports, and their top executive gets appointed by Bush to run MARAD. What a coincidince.

I don't know. I got concerned when this Dubai-based company bought these port facilities. Now, we find out that one of their top employees gets an appointment to an almost cabinet-level position...a position which regulates the very company he left. And this is right after the first announcement, so it's been in the works for some time.

So, we have an ex-employee regulating his former employer. Nothing fishy about that. Nope. Nothing going on here folks...return to your homes.
