An Iranian test launch of a Shihab-3 intercontinental ballistic missile Jan. 17 ended in failure, FlightInternational.com reported Tuesday. However, Western sources told the British-based magazine and Web site that Iran was still making significant progress towards its target of developing an operational capability to strike targets in mainland Europe. The sources did not specify the nature of the failure.

Not only mainland Europe, but Israel too. And perhaps they could shoot a small nuke missle at a large fleet of U.S. warships. All kinds of interesting possibilities.

Not only mainland Europe, but Israel too.

They can already hit Israel with their IRBM's.

And perhaps they could shoot a small nuke missle at a large fleet of U.S. warships.

Hitting a constantly moving target with a ballistic missile is not the easiest thing to do. Besides, the SM-2 and now the SM-3 missile can most likely shoot it down.

Would not put it past them to fail a test intentionally in order to give their allies in our and other goverments (the dems, ruskies, chicoms, etc.) ammo to delay our taking action.

It shouldn't be difficult in terms of range to strike Israel for Iran, at least compared to striking Europe that will require the technology to strike at the range to reach Europe. This is not just Europe's problem which have been one for Israel, but also a threat for US military installations in Europe, and at long terms, reaching out to U.S.

An airburst above a fleet of ships wouldn't do the ships much good. Close counts with nukes. Don't have to hit anything dead center.

You also need fairly high yield to wipe out an entire battle group as they are not all clustered together. The Iranians don't have even standard atomic bombs yet much less fusion boosted or thermonuclear weapons.

The SM-2 and the new SM-3 can shoot down any missile long before it reaches an altitude that would cause danger to the battle group.

Your right. You can have deceptive tests. i.e. Israel at its closest is a 650 mile shot. The missile they have can easily go 750 miles. So you position the missile 700 miles from Israel program it for a 700 mile shot to see how close you would be to hitting Israel.

Then announce you are going to try to get 1200 miles out of the missile. You can do that 1200 miles inside Iran from the NW corner to the SE corner of the country. So you shoot it and it comes down 700 miles away where you wanted it to hit, and announce it is a failure because it didn't make the 1200 miles. - tom

Iran already has mobile missile launchers reportedly moving on a daily basis in the southwest of the country. From there they can deliver their payload to Israel.

Lack of payola to Clinton when he was handing out secrets in the '90s?

Actually, during Operation CROSSROADS in 1946, Shot ABLE missed its mark by about a half mile and achieved very disappointing results in terms of damage to the target fleet inside Bikini Atoll. The failure interestingly proved that a fast moving fleet could in fact survive a 20 KT airburst, albeit with a lot of radioaftive contamination.

A month later, Shot BAKER was detonated directly underneath the target fleet, with much more devastating results, and is the more spectacular explosion that is usually shown in documentaries, movies, and the like. I would recommend the film Trinity & Beyond for anyone interested in how atomic testing and nuclear explosions actually affect their targets.

A guidance system problem?

Well, if so, you can call Slick Willie Clinton at BR-549.

"Shucks, golly" exclaimed Slick Wille. "1200 miles to Greece is nothin'. For a little ol' campaign contribution for my wife Hillary, I can get that missile to hit my favorite whorehouse in Paris!"
