A Nigerian group has claimed responsibility for the abduction of nine foreign workers during its attack on an oil facility Saturday.
Along with three Americans and a Briton, the group says it kidnapped two Thais, two Egyptians and a Filipino.
The U.S. Embassy in the capital Abuja and the British Foreign Office has confirmed the abductions of their citizens.
In an e-mail, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta called the kidnappings "impromptu and directly related to attacks on Ijaw communities in Delta state by the Nigerian military."
"This is not the promised strike," the group warned. "That will take place on a grander scale."

How much aid are we giving to Nigeria?
Any further info? I know the Ibos of northern Nigeria - who were apparently also attacked today - are Christians and are also the traders of the region.
What are the Ijwas?
I noticed that the leader of the group attacking the oil industry in southern Nigeria had the first name "Mujahid," so while southern Nigeria is supposedly Christian, I am assuming that some of the attackers are not.
Is this part of a concerted strategy, or are these simply casual coincidences?
These fellows are heading for a meeting with the scariest men on earth. I don't think these fellows will survive the meeting.
I believe Christian versus the ROP has been a long term low level war, kind of like the Sudan, but not as far along.
where are their own security forces? doesn't anyone have an army anymore?
we ought to fly some AC130s in there and hit the rebel positions.
Standard third world mix of Catholicism overlain on a lot of their original animist beliefs.
Yeah....we hear this alot.
Amazing what a few cartoons will do to uncivilized savages who wallow around like beasts from the dark ages.
Who would that be? "The scariest men on Earth."
I may have jumped the gun on this. I don't know how it will be handled, but my first quick impression for some reason was these people might be rescued by a western ground force. I've had SF friends that have conducted rescues in Africa. As far as "scary" my take is very few humans have been on the the recieving end of an Army Special Forces or a SAS hostage rescue and I think the survivors of those few incidents might agree that the men they saw that day were "the scariest men on earth"
