Clinton urges EU to convict publishers of caricatures
Daily Times Pakistan ^ | 2/17/06 | Daily Times

Posted on 02/17/2006 3:18:19 PM PST by voletti

ISLAMABAD: Former US president Bill Clinton on Friday condemned the publication of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) caricatures by European newspapers and urged countries concerned to convict the publishers.

Talking to reporters after meeting Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in Islamabad, Clinton said he disagreed with the caricatures and that the publication was against religious and ethical norms. Clinton said he had no objection to peaceful demonstrations being held worldwide, but this was not the time for violence. He said it was the time to promote inter-faith harmony and stand together on the issue.

He said the people’s religious convictions should be respected at all costs and the media should be disallowed to play with the religious sentiments of other faiths. He said the media could criticise any issue including governments and people, but nobody had the right to play with the sentiments of other faiths.

Clinton said people in the US had also condemned the publication and were deeply concerned over it. He said they respected Islam, as it was the fastest growing religion in the US. Clinton also called on President Pervez Musharraf and both men discussed the India-Pakistan peace process and Afghanistan’s peace and stabilisation process.

Musharraf underlined the centrality of the Kashmir issue in the Indo-Pak peace process and the importance of moving towards the conflict resolution stage. Clinton praised Musharraf’s efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. Musharraf thanked Clinton for the support extended to the Pakistani government by the Clinton Foundation for the HIV/AIDS programme. He also expressed the gratitude of Pakistanis to the relief and reconstruction assistance provided for the earthquake victims by the US.

Earlier, Aziz told Clinton that Pakistan was working towards peace and stability in the region through a strong economy, effective diplomacy, credible defence and promotion of inter-faith harmony. He said Pakistan was also making efforts to ensure peace in the region by settling disputes in an amicable way. He said Islam was a religion of peace and Muslims had been hurt by the publication of the caricatures, which reflected the ignorance and insensitivity of the western media. Clinton praised the role played by Musharraf and Aziz in achieving a high degree economic growth and wide-ranging structural reforms besides pursuing peace in the region and across the globe.

I didn't see anything in this article that confirmed Clinton's desire to convict those that published the cartoons. What I did see was this:

He said the people’s religious convictions should be respected at all costs and the media should be disallowed to play with the religious sentiments of other faiths. He said the media could criticize any issue including governments and people, but nobody had the right to play with the sentiments of other faiths.

Does the "at all costs" include the right to free speech from the religions other than Islam? He wants to allow constrictions on the press on criticism of Islam, but Christianity is open season? Buzz... thanks for playing, but wrong answer.

"Shame on the clintoon admin and all its beneficiaries."

And Hillary goes around talking about the "corruption" and "lack of full disclosure" of the current administration.

The lack of shame observations are trite, I know. But the fact is the Clinton Administration was highly incompetent, which, the press has successfully kept from being widely recognized.

The fact that they were, of course, the most corrupt administration in history is known by all but the kood-aid drinkers, but rarely do you hear pointed out just how frightening incompetent they were--all they were about was image and smoke and mirrors--the "booming economy" of the 90's turning out to be largely a mirage when the cyber baloon exploded is a perfect metaphor for that entire 8 years that some would idealize as having been so well managed.

Only Mark Cuban, who is now owner of the Dallas Mavericks after becoming a billionaire from selling his Internet company without it ever turning a dime of profit got a better ROI than the Clintons in the 90's.

The Clintons are the classic poster children of Democrats being all talk and no substance. Just like the Party they represent, they stand for NOTHING.

Sounds like he's starting down the path of his ex- (Al Gore), each playing "Can You Top This?" with their idiotic statements.

"That is a myth that he is a Rhodes scholar"

I think the truth is that he was elected a Rhodes Scholar candidate, but like most leftists of his time, lost any regard for such establishment academic distinctions, and wandered off to "find himself"... in Russia and communist eastern Europe. Consequently, he did not finish the requirments of the Rhodes Scholar program. He was an intellectually lazy SOB anyway, and probably would have been accused of rape or worse had he remained in England.

It doesn't quote him saying the publishers should be legally liable. Did he really say that? I can understand how one can say as a moral matter, one should be respectful, but to outlaw free speech as a legal matter is rephrehensible.

Right, As long as someone else's head rolls and not his.

It doesn't get any more obnoxious than this man.

Guess Bubba never has understood the Magna Carta, US Constitution of the nature of freedom to think and speak as one cares too.
Could this be the reason that Bubba organized and participated in the Communist led antiwar protests in the UK while running from the draft?

This is a Pak paper providing a typical Pak interpretation of what the funny little foreign guy said. Not to be believed.

Right. Note the absence of actual quotes.

To the people of Pakistan: this a-hole does not speak for me! I do not respect Islam and if I owned a paper, I would feature these cartoons in a full-page spread every day for a week!

but, I dont see any quotes here from clinton to support the sensatonal headline.

Nope, nary a direct quote to be found.

Im thinking islamabad has inserted their own editorial to make full use of clintons propoganda delivery.

I agree. Birds of a feather (and all that).

You have to complete the program to truly be a Rhodes scholar. The truth is this bum only used the opportunity to travel for free to what all the dope-smoking hippies thought was some kind of paradise where the hash and p**ntang were free and everyone just kind of hung around making nice if they weren't actually screwing. The bum has always bad-mouthed America just as he did back then to all his Sorbonne Leftie and Che wannbe cronies, who were as ubiquitious as filth in Europe back in those days (probably still are). He was a bum back then, he was a bum as POTUS, and if possible, an even bigger bum now then back then.

This deep respect for religion must be a new thing for Billy Jeff. His charming wife decorated their personal tree in the White House with colored condoms as I recall from that Secret Service guy's book...what was his name???

If I said what I think my comment would be pulled. Clinton is a lying steaming POS criminal and a walking offense. May he breathe his last soon.
