ISLAMABAD: Former US president Bill Clinton on Friday condemned the publication of Prophet Muhammads (PBUH) caricatures by European newspapers and urged countries concerned to convict the publishers.
Talking to reporters after meeting Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in Islamabad, Clinton said he disagreed with the caricatures and that the publication was against religious and ethical norms. Clinton said he had no objection to peaceful demonstrations being held worldwide, but this was not the time for violence. He said it was the time to promote inter-faith harmony and stand together on the issue.
He said the peoples religious convictions should be respected at all costs and the media should be disallowed to play with the religious sentiments of other faiths. He said the media could criticise any issue including governments and people, but nobody had the right to play with the sentiments of other faiths.
Clinton said people in the US had also condemned the publication and were deeply concerned over it. He said they respected Islam, as it was the fastest growing religion in the US. Clinton also called on President Pervez Musharraf and both men discussed the India-Pakistan peace process and Afghanistans peace and stabilisation process.
Musharraf underlined the centrality of the Kashmir issue in the Indo-Pak peace process and the importance of moving towards the conflict resolution stage. Clinton praised Musharrafs efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. Musharraf thanked Clinton for the support extended to the Pakistani government by the Clinton Foundation for the HIV/AIDS programme. He also expressed the gratitude of Pakistanis to the relief and reconstruction assistance provided for the earthquake victims by the US.
Earlier, Aziz told Clinton that Pakistan was working towards peace and stability in the region through a strong economy, effective diplomacy, credible defence and promotion of inter-faith harmony. He said Pakistan was also making efforts to ensure peace in the region by settling disputes in an amicable way. He said Islam was a religion of peace and Muslims had been hurt by the publication of the caricatures, which reflected the ignorance and insensitivity of the western media. Clinton praised the role played by Musharraf and Aziz in achieving a high degree economic growth and wide-ranging structural reforms besides pursuing peace in the region and across the globe.
I was thinking the same thing. If any other news source, say, a reputable Western source that actually quotes him saying this, I might start to believe he said something similar to it, but I still won't believe he said anything about anybody actually being convicted of a crime. In the first place, even he's not that stupid. In the second place, the article doesn't say under what European law he said the publishers should be tried, let alone convicted. Convicted of what? He may have said everything else that the article paraphrased him as saying, that sounds just like him sucking up to his audience as per his usual self, but not the part about convicting anybody.
"Convict them of what?"
Thought crimes? For being insensitive to the sensibilities of animals who want to kill us? No wonder all the eurosocialists love him so much!
Nope. I searched for it, could bnot find one.
Paki newspapers have a way with wishing their desires into pseudo-reality and presenting spin as fact.
...that ain't gonna happen, hildabeast can't be held accountable for something she may say. Its gotta be scripted by her staff before she can respond
...or be left by a tree in a park after getting hit by a subway train
This lying moral degenerate, this traitor, this parasite who lives off the money of the public trough is a hypocrite.
Where was his outrage over anti-Christian cartoon, and "works of art" here? Where was his outrage over vicious anti-Jewish cartoons in the Muslim press?
The truth is, if Mohammad was alive today, he wouldn't be consulting with Islamic "moderates" whoever they are, but in a cave with Bin Ladden building bombs.
Apparently the good lawyer Clinton, like so many attorneys in America today, believe the bill of rights is valid only as prescribed the law - the law as they choose to see it at the moment.
Remember, Sandy Berger cut a deal that included loosing his Security clearance for 3 years. That runs out in Feb. 2008 - 11 days after the new President is sworn in...
He can't have it as the Sec. General of the U.N. cannot come from the nations that are permanent members of the Security Council.
Whoa, I knew Clinton was weak, corrupt and narcisstic but this is some evil stuff. He's willing to sacrifice free speech (ie. the ability to cry wolf) at the alter of abject tolerence of anything. All at the point of a gun. Man, I'm just waiting for this guy to grow seven heads with seven crowns. (just kidding...sort of.)
I checked wiki and a sec gen from the 5 permanent members is not strictly forbidden, but would break from tradition.

Has anyone found another primary source saying that Clinton said conviction?
Someone ought to invite this jackass for a stroll through Ft. Marcy Park.
Bill Clinton is a hazard to the world's health and knows nothing about the things of God or ethical norms.
He is, however, an accomlished liar and a sexual pervert!
There is nothing I can say to this that won't get me banned, or receive a visit from the Feds. I loathe that bastard with every fiber of my being.
And just who gets to determine what constitutes that, Bubba?
I love libs. They're all for free speech as long as it's speech they agree with and/or speech that serves their purposes.
And I wonder if Hillie agrees with her husband on this subject? Oh, Hillie...
Bill, a criminal like yourself, NEVER understands freedom.
Mr. Clinton could have done something about the prosecution of Waco survivors.
