They made Auto Shack change their name in the early 90's, now they're Autozone. Probably did them a favor......

The name made sense when they started out in the business in 1921 when they catered to ham radio operators and experimenters. Hams have always called their equipment location their "shack" regardless of where it actually was. Some actually had shacks for the purpose (wives wouldn't let the stuff in the house). What with the evolving technology and vastly changed consumer electronics market, it's a wonder they have survived as long as they have.

Price, product and service sell. The name is of little consequence.

I quite agree with you on a name change. They should take the "Radio" out of the name since they now sell almost no radios other than cheapo Chinese made junk. Their AM radios can barely pick up a 50,000 watt station at night. They no longer sell any amateur radio radios and their parts inventory has dwindled to nothing. This is too bad since they were the only place around to get certain parts.

Heh. In the Ham community, at least in my neck of the woods, we've called it ripoff shack for decades. Or just sh*t shack.

But I used to go there and get a lot of parts for projects and they used to have most of what I needed, but lately they carry less and less. The other day my wife tripped over the power cable of her laptop (again) and it shattered the little receptacle for it that's mounted on the motherboard (again - and let me tell you it is a huge chore to strip an Acer laptop to the bones and put it back together, but I digress). The first time I was able to stick the connector back together with some super glue but this time it went into a million pieces so I needed a new part. Went to sh*t shack to get a new one and they carry like one size of those little coaxial power receptacles and of course it isn't the right one, so I had to get a different size and also change it's mate on the power supply cord. And that's usually the sort of thing I have to do when I have a project because, like most people, I work all day and those are the hours the local "real" electronics supply place is open.

So I don't know. Sounds like they are moving farther away from the hobbyist market and more to the appliance consumer market and that makes no sense to me. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting three other places that already have exactly the same things the shack wants to sell, and usually cheaper. In the end I expect they'll be shutting down more stores if that's the way they want to go.
