Study: Antarctic temperature misreported

UTRECHT, Netherlands, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Dutch researcher Michiel Helsen says Antarctica temperature fluctuations are not being accurately recorded in the composition of the snow of Antarctica.

The Utrecht University scientist says his research into the isotopic composition of the Antarctic snow has exposed the complexity of climate reconstructions.

Polar ice caps contain valuable information about the earth's climate. Helsen investigated the extent to which meteorological data are stored in the composition of snow in order to improve the interpretation of deep ice cores from the Antarctic ice cap.

He demonstrated annual temperature variations in Antarctica could not be accurately reconstructed from ice core investigations since conditions during snowfall are not representative enough for the average weather over an entire year.

The research was supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research.

"He demonstrated annual temperature variations in Antarctica could not be accurately reconstructed from ice core investigations since conditions during snowfall are not representative enough for the average weather over an entire year."

Not only that, but the temperature variations would only be viable for the area they occur in.

You can't predict the temperature variations at the equator based upon the temperature variations in Antartica.

Although environmentalists keep trying.

Seems I heard there were some surprises about the ice pack in Greenland with the Lost Squadron. It turns out that the snow/ice depth of the planes was much greater than anticipated; they were down a couple hundred feet.
