Farmworkers sue FEMA over lack of aid following hurricanes

By Denise Kalette The Associated Press

February 16, 2006

MIAMI · A coalition of Florida farmworkers has sued the Federal Emergency Management Agency, alleging the government refused to help undocumented farmworkers displaced by hurricanes with housing because of their immigration status.

Many farmworkers who were denied federal help after their homes were destroyed were forced to live in cars and other dangerous situations, while trailers intended for emergency housing went unused, according to a lawsuit filed last week...

In an America I used to know, not so terribly long ago, these Illegal Immigrants would have been rounded up and sent back home the moment the lawsuit hit the courts. Furthermore, the judge would have probably issued arrest warrants for the maggot lawyers involved in this travesty.

Dear God when can we get it back.

Illegal aliens just get bolder and bolder with their demands.

A few Presidential order could spare us from their whining but the shrieks would be deafening from the left.

I am ardently opposed to illegal immigration.

But I think this lawsuit is a good thing.

If the government was doing it job and enforcing existing laws and jailing or deporting the Criminal Aliens, they wouldn't have been here to be damaged by the hurricane.

So, even though my tax dollars will pay for the government's defense against the suit, I think it's a good thing.

I cannot fathom how it has come to this...the welfare state is expanding under the Republicans. We need to ignite a true conservative movement while we still have a country that we can recognize...

I'll bet the "coalition" can get enough sappy lefty donations to buy them a big mansion to live in (or give them one they own, perhaps). No? But I thought they were sooo supportive of our friends south of the border...

If you can't fathom that, then try imagining how much it would have expanded under Gore or Kerry!

That is true. However, I would expect it under them, not under a Republican President.

What kind of idiot lawyer would take a case like this?
I like the idea of lawyers being penalized for taking on such blatantly ridiculous cases. It costs the honest hardworking taxpayer money and ties up the court system. The judge should give them all a free trip to Siberia as compensation for their
grief.

Just curious but which bill in the Bill of Rights gives foreign residents, whether in this country legally or illegally, any rights at all?

But, you can't be on the jury because the lawyers will demand a jury of their peers.

"Just curious but which bill in the Bill of Rights gives foreign residents, whether in this country legally or illegally, any rights at all?"

The problem (as I see it) is that the Founders used 'person' and 'citizen' pretty much interchangeably. One of their few errors. I've advocated an Amendment changing the word "person" to "citizen" throughout the document and repealing the 14th amendment which has caused no end of mischief--one of the worst being the "anchor baby" phenomenon.

In a sane world these people would have no standing to sue (says this engineer).

Let' see. I can live in Mexico, but I cannot work there without a government permit. As a foreigner, I cannot get such permit. On the other hand, undocumented/illegal immigrants(Mexicans) are working in our country without any kind of authorization. They overwhelm our social services, schools and hospitals. All of this is bad enough, but using our legal system against any challenge to their "Rights" is beyond absurd.

On a personal note: I'm getting tired of pressing 1 for English. Shouldn't it be, "Press one for Spanish?
