They're less than two months from taking the field, but the team known as Houston 1836 may soon change its name. The 1836 is the team which used to be the San Jose Earthquakes, but the new name is causing a little controversy here in Houston.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What's in a name? Apparently a lot since Major League Soccer announced that the San Jose Earthquakes were coming to Houston and would be called Houston 1836.

"People have been very sincere. Some say I don't like the name or feel offended because of the name," explained team president Oliver Luck. "They appreciate the fact that we use the name to symbolize the founding of the city, but certain things mean different things to folks."

To some, 1836 might mean Texas independence. To others, it was the defeat of the Mexican army at San Jacinto and thus loss of some Mexican territory. Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia says 1836 might be sensitive to members of the Hispanic community and more.

Texas Independence is offensive to Hispanics. This is growing steam in Texas, where you are allowed to celebrate Mexican Indepedence Day, Cinco De Mayo, but God forbid you celebrate Texas Independence day. Hispanic activist actual protest Texas Independence Day celebrations, and pass resolutions denouncing it. PC run amok.

This was inevitable. This country is in alot of trouble. For God Sakes, LA elected a former member of MECHA as their mayor. It is only a matter of time.

I always fly my Texas flag on March 2, Texas Independence Day, and again on April 21, San Jacinto Day (and Aggie Muster).

Why don't they rename the team the Lawnmowers in honor of the hardworking landscaping professionals who get the field ready for the games.

Reminds me of a funny joke from years back, about the NBA's Washington Bullets (who have since changed their name.) It went something like:

"Because they no longer want to have a team name associated with gang violence and murder, the Washington Bullets have decided to drop the word "Washington" from their name."

Ever read Sam Houston's bio? He led an amazing life:

U. S. Congressman from Tennessee;
Governor of Tennessee;
Citizen of the Cherokee Indian Nation;
Commander-in-Chief and General of the army and navy (all four ships)of the Republic of Texas;
Subsequently twice elected President of the Republic of Texas;
After admission to the Union, served as U. S. Senator from Texas.

How about dumping it because "Houston 1836" is a stupid name, not because it might offend MeCHa and La Raza? It sounds like an old-style phone number out of a 1930s film noir.

Call 'em the Houston Guys Who Whipped Santa Anna's Ass instead. Or, hell, actually call them the Houston Independence. Why not?

People of all races and backgrounds were fighting against the tyranny of Santa Anna. How any AMERICAN of any stripe can be offended by Texas fighting and winning its independence is beyond comprehension.

Shame on the team for bowing to this revisionist PC garbage.

God bless all those people who fought and gave their lives for freedom!!!!!
