Whale meat back on school menus

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use.

AN increasing number of Japanese schools are putting whale meat back on the menu, education officials say.

The Wakayama board of education, which resumed the regular use of whale meat in school lunches in January 2005, has organised tasting events of whale meat in Tokyo and has asked school lunch panels of nationwide education boards to use the meat, the officials said.

The prefecture is famous for whaling, with its town of Taiji known as the birthplace of organised whaling in Japan.

"We want (schoolchildren) to know Japan's traditional dietary culture through whale meat which was popular in the past," an official of the education board said.

Schools in Nara and other prefectures began to offer whale meat from the latter half of last year following the promotion activities by the education board, the officials said.

Some 1657kg of whale meat were provided via the school lunch panel of Wakayama's board of education for more than 100 elementary and junior high schools in Kyoto, Osaka and Nara prefectures and Tokyo in January of this year alone, the officials said.

The amount for January is about double the amount for the whole last year.

The Kanagawa prefectural board of education is considering offering whale meat for lunch and a tasting event was organised at an elementary school in the city of Kawasaki in late January, they said.

The meat of minke whale from Japan's research whaling is used to make dishes such as deep fried whale seasoned with soy sauce.

The use of whale meat for lunch at nationwide schools, excluding those in whaling areas, had been halted since 1982 when the International Whaling Commission suspended commercial whaling in 1982.

"I've always wondered what that tasted like."

There used to be a recipe for it in the old Joy of Cooking cookbook. I don't know if it's still there. But it looks WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too lean for this old carnivore. I prefer my steaks well-marbled.

I'd be willing to try the fritters, but I'd opt for the panda stew instead of the Gorilla "oysters"

Whale sounds good, but I wouldn't touch cat-they're dirty-and the kind of oysters you're talking about, never!

too lean for this old carnivore

You could crock pot it with onions and a dollop of soup base, or chicken fry them. Either way would be good with mashed potatoes.

It's not. They also took out the squirrel ,hare, and buffalo recipes. I have several editions. It's sort of amusing how the book has changed over the years.
