Steinbrenner rewards fan who helped save school

LITTLE ROCK - A young New York Yankees fan who saved $1,000 so he could take himself out to a ballgame in the Bronx gave up the money to help keep his local school open. Yankees owner George Steinbrenner found out about the boy's charity and invited him to New York. ''Jonathan, I couldn't be more proud of you,'' Steinbrenner wrote to Jonathan Farrar, a student in the Midland School District of Pleasant Plains. ''I agree with you when you said, 'The New York Yankees are important to me, but my school is more important.' You're absolutely right and it takes quite a man to give up his personal dream for a higher purpose.'' Arkansas' state Board of Education had considered merging Midland schools into any of seven surrounding districts, but voted Monday to keep the district alive after townspeople raised $400,000 to cover a projected budget shortfall. Farrar donated $1,000 that he had set aside to pay for a trip to New York this summer for his 13th birthday in May. Steinbrenner said in the letter he had heard about Farrar's efforts, and he invited him to New York for a game at Yankee Stadium, and a personal tour of the stadium and the field during batting practice. He also replaced Farrar's $1,000.

ballgames cost $1000? i didn't realize they had gotten so expensive.

whenever i see a story like this i tend to suspect the entire situation was intentionally constructed. call me cynical - but this is the media and steinbrenner certainly knows how to use it.

Too bad he couldn't get Paul O'Neil to hit two home runs, too.

Don't be fooled, the Yankees are the focus of evil in the modern world.

No, but I assume it costs about that to fly round trip to New York and stay in a hotel in NYC.

George is just misunderstood. He really is a softie deep down inside. :)

Four beers, three hot dogs, decent seats, parking - a kid could easilty drop around $700.00, I imagine. :-)

Of course, the last game I paid to get in, Mark Fidrych was pitching. I think it cost me $10.00.

Steinbrenner is a softie:

Steinbrenner: Ade, Ade, I like that name George.

George: She supports her whole family. (walking slowly into the room)

Steinbrenner: Is that a fact George?

George: Yes, In fact, her mother is in the hospital right now. It's
some kind of a Diverticulitis. (he continues walking slowly towards
Steinbrenner’s desk)

Steinbrenner: I had a bout of that myself one time -- knocked me right
on my ass.

George: She can’t even afford to go out to lunch. She's been eating in
a high school cafeterias She pretends to be a teacher. It's pathetic.

Steinbrenner: What's that cost her, like, two and a quarter? ($2.25)

George: You know what I was just thinking -- she could really use a
raise.

(Telephone rings -- Steinbrenner reaches for the receiver)

Steinbrenner: You know, she'd be better off making a sandwich at home
and bringing it in. (picks up the telephone hand set) Hello, ah, George
will you excuse me.

$1000 today is like $170 when you and I were growing up. I remember it seemed like a fortune but it was doable.
