There was a secret project in the Pentagon that tried to use data mining to find terrorists in the US. This was in the 1999/2000 time frame. Able Danger identified Mohammad Atta and had his photograph along with 2 other 9-11 hijackers, but lawyers stopped Able Danger from sharing this information with the FBI.
