Cheney shoots lawyer in hunt accident
13 February 2006 07:10
Never sneak up behind Dick Cheney when he has a gun in his hand. That is the painful lesson learned by Texas lawyer Harry Whittington (78) in a hunting accident at the weekend.
Whittington, the United States vice-president, and a third person went quail shooting on Saturday at one of the grandest ranches in Texas.
While Cheney and the third man laid in wait for the quail, Whittington approached them from behind without signalling his presence. Just then the quail were flushed out.
The owner of the ranch, Katharine Armstrong, witnessed the incident.
"The vice-president didn't see him," she told the Associated Press news agency. "He picked out a bird and shot and, my God, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good.
"It broke the skin," she said. "It knocked him silly. But he was fine. He was talking. His eyes were open. It didn't get in his eyes or anything like that."
Armstrong added that these things happen "from time to time -- you know, I've been peppered pretty well myself".
Fortunately for Whittington, a millionaire lawyer from Austin, the vice-president's medical team, on permanent call due to his sometimes fragile physical condition, were nearby.
"Fortunately, the vice-president has got a lot of medical people round him and they were right there," Armstrong said.
"He has an ambulance permanently on call and it came immediately."
Although the incident occurred at 5.30pm, Whittington was not admitted to the nearby Corpus Christi Memorial hospital until 8.15pm. He was treated for birdshot injuries to the neck, chest and face, and was said to be in good condition and good spirits.
On Sunday, he was visited by Cheney at the hospital.
Cheney is an avid hunter who makes annual trips to South Dakota to hunt pheasants and to Arkansas to hunt ducks.
Oh didn't know that part.
Dont feel so bad anymore 8-)
Cheney's biggest mistake was not shooting a lawyer.
It was leaving him still around to sue Cheney for it...
I'm steeling myself for a barrage of Cheney hunting/2nd amendment jokes.
Didn't know they were in season, Dick. Hope you got yer limit.
I think it's time for Cheney to get on TV and ask Gore and Clinton if they'd like to go hunting with him.
Actually- it's kind of refreshing.
Usually the President and Vice President are being shot AT.
What are the odds of one of them actually being the 'perp'?
Stay tuned- will he sue the VP?
LOL...that was my exact thoughts as well...maybe he'll be offered a reward. I think it's time for Cheney to get on TV and ask Gore and Clinton if they'd like to go hunting with him.
Perhaps it was no accident. ;-) Perhaps it was a settling of scores.
There are already existing threads with hundreds of posts on this hunting accident topic.

Yes we should mention one of them is in breaking news.
Fox reports "buckshot"...Hunting quail? LOL
He was actually one of the good guys.
He was fighting against the city of austin from taking a block his family owned.
He had just won a major eminent domain case in the texas supreme court.
He was a good republican lawyer versus a democrat like ronnie earle.
Shakespeare : My friend, we're going to make a NEW world, first we'll shoot all the lawyers...and then there was the case of the hole in the fence between heaven and hell. Bad guys(sappers if you will)were sneaking through and causing all kinds of havoc. Saint Peter had to go around and catch them to throw them back over the fence. Finally tiring of this nuisance he yelled at satan : if you don't fix this hole in the fence, I'm going to SUE! Satan's reply : have you got any lawyers?
NBC, ABC and CBS on broadcast media are reporting 'shot with a powerful shotgun loaded with buckshot' on Michigan crap tv. From what I read, it was a 28 gauge with #8 shot. The MSM at it's finest-again.
So our pond scum versus their pond scum...
Aiiiight as they say in the hood. This one is in our gang.
I bet he was only trying to build sympathy with the public.
On the other hand........"laid in wait for quail"....
last time I hunted quial it was NOT by ambush.
PS; surprising someone with a loaded firearm has always been fairly high up on my list of things not to do.
