How would such a thing end up in Austria.

At the time of the conquest of Mexico by Cortez, the Spanish King was Charles, son of Spanish Princess Joanna (daughter of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand) and son of the Hapsburg Archduke Philip the Fair.

Apart from being King of Spain, the Dutch-raised Charles also became Emperor Charles the Fifth of the Holy Roman Empire.

The dynastic marriage brought nothing but trouble for Spain and the Netherlands.

When Charles assumed the throne, a war or rebellion was fought in Spain as the Spaniards regarded Charles as a Dutch-born interloper using Spain for Dutch interests. When Charles' son Philip II assumed the throne, a war or rebellion began in the Netherlands as the Dutch regarded Philip as a Spanish-born interloper using the Netherlands for Spanish interests.

While the U.S. gets most of the liberal blame for wiping out Native American cultures, the British, French, and primarily the Spanish, did FAR FAR more damage to hundreds more Native American cultures in over 300 years of brutal conquest than America ever did in just the 1800s. But I digress.

The Americans of 1776 did not land from Martian space craft. They were the descendent's of the British conquest and colonization of North America. You cannot separate one from the other.

Except for islands such as Cuba and Puerto Rico where the pressures of the conquest killed off all of the native Indians in the 1500's, the Spanish conquest did far less harm to the Indian populations that the British conquests did.

When you look at the average Mexican, you can plainly see that his genetic makeup is mainly Indian.

By contrast, the Indian population of the original 13 colonies is today almost nonexistant.

Would that Mexico would petition the U.S. for the return of all its citizens who've found their way across the border...

Emperor Maximilian, possibly?

"Do i feel my life and modern civilization has gained a single usefull thing from these societies?"You do have a point there. The head dress represents a high point in what for all intents and purposes was a technologically stagnant continent, which for the most part was still living in the stone age.Mexico should appreciate the fact it's been preserved.

Maybe we could cut a deal, get it from Austria for some price or the other, give it to the last illegal from Mexico on his return.

It was only right that the Obelisk was returned to Ethiopia, it was a recent acquisition.

You are absolutely correct, but I do believe there are many who are 1/4 kringle...

I would be pleased to debate anyone out there who feels that I have.

It's an interesting question. Who "owns" ancient artifacts? By which I mean, archeological artifacts with no clear chain of title.

What's wrong with the argument that these objects are "owned" by the country of origin?

Ah, so Mexico requests that a gift be returned.

Hmmm...

Looks like a previous MEXICAN government gave it away as a gift.

I think the act of gifting is being overlooked here. I believe artifacts and such should remain within their originating cultures but when gifts are given and then asked to be returned afterward, that's another story.

Yeah and they also ripped the hearts out of living human beings and allowed their seeping blood to run down into the streets, while consuming the organ otherwise.

They put to gruesome death any and all who they captured in contests and did so by chopping their limbs off one at a time while their conquered were still alive.

They might have built interesting "temples" out of stone but their legacy of the Central Americas is that of gruesome, horrible cultures of blood and lust.

Yes, but that Obelisk was "looted" from Ethiopia in earlier times. The headdress in Austria was a gift from Mexico.

I think the distinction is significant and bears being discussed.

I say give them back the headdress and then send Mexico an invoice for storage and social services for all the years of goods and services that have been "given" to Mexico by most of the modern world.

That seems to be the "Mexican" standard.
