CA: Gov.'s Campaign Is in Debt

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is entering his reelection campaign $410,000 in debt, while his Democratic rivals and union foes are armed with more than $50 million.

He also continued supplementing his aides' government salaries by paying them additional sums in campaign money, according to campaign reports filed with the state Tuesday.

--snip--

Although his opponents spent almost $100 million to defeat the initiatives Schwarzenegger championed in the November vote, many of them emerged with hefty bank accounts.

Controller Steve Westly and Treasurer Phil Angelides, who are competing in the Democratic primary to face the Republican governor next November, started the new year with $24 million and $17.1 million respectively, their reports show.

At $59.8 million, the California Teachers Assn. was the biggest spender in 2005, leading the effort ... But the union, .. nevertheless started the new year with $11.6 million.

The California Correctional Peace Officers' Assn., the prison officers' union that also worked to defeat the governor's measures, reported having at least $5.3 million. .. State Council of Service Employees, a union representing many government employees, spent $20.1 million .. and has $675,000 heading into the 2006 election.

Schwarzenegger's reelection campaign account had $147,000 in cash and $557,000 in debt as of Dec. 31. Donors generally cannot give more than $22,300 each to a gubernatorial candidate. Schwarzenegger is allowed to spend unlimited sums of his own money on his campaign.

The governor has a separate fund for promoting and opposing ballot initiatives. After he spent $45 million for that account, it had $503,000 in cash and debt of $278,000.

Marty Wilson, who oversees fund-raising for the governor, ... "I'm confident we'll have the funds necessary," Wilson said.

Angelides and Westly need war chests for the primary fight, while Schwarzenegger probably won't have a June challenger.

That is still 59 million less they will have to spend in the 2006 campaign.

With re-election bid ahead, governor's cupboard is bare
By Kevin Yamamura and Andy Furillo

After a special election with a price tag that topped $275 million, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's personal war chest is virtually empty as he begins his 2006 re-election campaign, according to reports filed Tuesday with the secretary of state.

Schwarzenegger's ballot initiative committee alone exhausted $45.5 million during last year's special election campaign in which voters rejected eight ballot proposals, including four specifically backed by the governor.

With all the large campaign committees reporting, opponents of the governor spent about $121 million to defeat those four initiatives, while Schwarzenegger and his allies fought the battle with $76 million of their own.

The Republican governor also raised $2.5 million for his personal re-election campaign, but he spent $3 million on everyday expenses and supporting his initiative drive.

That left Schwarzenegger with $147,000 in cash and $556,000 in debt in his campaign account as of Dec. 31. Much of that debt - $336,000 - was owed to his personal holding company, Oak Productions, for travel, lodging and meals.

"Obviously, we have a lot of fundraising to do, and we've begun that in earnest this month," said Schwarzenegger fundraiser Marty Wilson. "We're getting a good response. I feel confident we'll have the resources necessary to wage an aggressive campaign in the fall."

The governor's lack of a competitive primary likely leaves enough time to refill his coffers before the November general election, but his potential Democratic opponents won't have that same luxury.

yikes
sounds like Arnold is going to have to retire earlier than he anticipated
i am concerned about the DSCC money advantage too
they have something like 10 million more to throw around at Senate campaigns than our team does may make the difference in some close races

There are also 2 campaigns this year so .. we'll see how deep teachers pockets really are.

Maybe the unions will eventually disintegrate from within as they keep extorting funds and enforcing their own agenda, which includes their own members as victims in the long run. The Mafia must be jealous of how they get away with it.

McClintock is a good guy. But the advantage of Arnold as gov. is that when Arnold talks people listen. When arnold came to Columbus to campaign for bush, it was in all the papers and on the tv and radio stations. The same would not have been true for Tom.

For the most part, repubs have to buy media time to get their message out while the dems get free coverage. At least with arnold, we get some free media.

Lets hope so -

"The governor has a separate fund for promoting and opposing ballot initiatives. After he spent $45 million for that account,it had $503,000 in cash and debt of $278,000.
"

Spends $45 Million, almost every dime in the account, and some here say he didn't do enough.

The problem is that Arnold talks a good game. Unfortunately he is all talk. He has accomplished more Dem stuff than the Dems did.

And there I heard so many idiot RINOs blathering that the iniatives had broken the unions financially. Such a shock.

They can tax their membership for money, and it's well worth it to them over the long run.

Kind of like the idiots who would say that Arnold forcing the unions to take a $100 Million hit in the pocketbook was no big deal ?

Your projection is a reflection on you. It is easy for 1.8 MILLION union members to pony up $100 each when the retirement benefits alone wildly exceed that amount. To assert that they are bankrupt is laughable, particularly when their incomes exceed those in comparable private roles.

I suppose we don't have to worry about that either - eventually the Indian casinos will have so much money they will simply buy the entire State back.

I'm gettin disgusted with him again! Neither one of 'em are gettin any money from me till they get sincere and start conserving the fiscal and financial resources at at least the same rate they're squandering those to supposedly preserve natural resources!!! (which is an infernal, obscene joke!)

Which they have every right to do if we're dumb enough to buy their product. It's the influence buying on behalf of an unconstitutional State-sanctioned oligopoly I can do without.

They won't need to do that either, simply pay to get themselves elected.

I think I'll bookmark this piece of whizdumb.

Here's a clue: nobody with real money runs for office themselves unless they are a clueless fool. It's too easy to find a gutless, craven, and pretty weasel to do it for you.

When arnold came to Columbus to campaign for bush...

What a valuable endorsement that was. The election could've turned on Ohio. I still believe Arnold helped save us from a Kerry Presidency :::shudder:::
