Sen. Obama Criticizes Filibuster Tactic

WASHINGTON Jan 29, 2006 — To more effectively oppose Supreme Court nominees in the future, Democrats need to convince the public "their values are at stake" rather than use stalling tactics to try to thwart the president, said a senator who opposes Samuel Alito's confirmation.

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., predicted on Sunday that an effort to try to block a final vote on Alito would fail on Monday. That would clear the way for Senate approval Tuesday of the federal appeals court judge picked to succeed the retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Democrats fear he would shift the court rightward on abortion rights, affirmative action, the death penalty and other issues. "We need to recognize, because Judge Alito will be confirmed, that, if we're going to oppose a nominee that we've got to persuade the American people that, in fact, their values are at stake," Obama said.

"There is an over-reliance on the part of Democrats for procedural maneuvers," he told ABC's "This Week."

Sens. John Kerry and Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts are urging fellow Democrats to support a filibuster, citing in part Alito's conservative record on abortion and deference to executive power.

Alito's supporters must produce 60 votes to cut off a filibuster; an Associated Press tally shows at least 62.

The AP tally also shows that at least 53 Republicans and three Democrats intend to vote to confirm Alito; that is well over the required majority.

President Bush said Saturday in his weekly radio address that senators should have an up-or-down on a nominee "who understands that the role of a judge is to strictly interpret the law."

Obama cast Alito as a judge "who is contrary to core American values, not just liberal values."

But Obama joined some Democrats, including Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Charles Schumer of New York, in expressing his unhappiness with the filibuster bid.

"There's one way to guarantee that the judges who are appointed to the Supreme Court are judges that reflect our values. And that's to win elections," Obama said.

Surprising to say, but Barack Obama is prudent, astute and highly perceptive on this one. After Harry Reid had all but promised no filibuster activity, Durbin, Kennedy and Kerry jumped into that tar pit without a moment's hesitation.

There is no overwhelming flood of evidence that Samuel Alito Jr. is ANY kind of radical. If anything, the belief that he is exactly the kind of reasoned calm voice the Supreme Court needs has been strongly reasserted, and ANY Dem'crat with a conscience knows what the vote should be.

Of course, there is the presumption that Dem'crats HAVE individual consciences. Their collective conscience is operating on the limbic level, about like that of an alligator.

...this is the first quote on Alito I've seen by a Democrat that actually makes sense!

This guy is one shrewd poker player.

Are they coming back to reality?

It's all about strategy. They would assert themselves if it would achieve their goals. But, some of them realize it would be political suicide... Unfortunately.

Watch out for this guy. He could sell a refrigerator to an Eskimo.

Though I have nothing but a gut belief on this, I think he is the front man for a very well organized and powerful movement to run him for president in 2012.

Hey Obama, why not just evaluate the fitness of the judge and advice and consent accordingly. Even the moderate Democrats look at every issue through a political prism to the point where doing whats best for the country is NEVER considered.

That's the whole problem, "their values" are different than the Democrats "values", therefore the Democrats have no choice but to resort to procedural maneuvers.

Harry Reid, Durbin, Kennedy and Kerry are old school.

Obama is new school.

But they all are alumni of the same school.

Don't worry...

I work for a company supplying the wood truss industry, so when I saw the word truss, you struck a chord on me. :)

I do hope that Bush gets to nominate at least one more to the Supreme Court. The left of this nation will be a ton of fun to watch.

The roof I have to repair is a flat one so the rafter work is a bit different than most. They still are wood though.

No offense taken as your's was a valid correction. Thanks.

I thought Obama told Georgie S. on his show this morning that he'll be voting "no" on cloture, even though he doesn't believe in the filibuster.

Anybody else hear that?

The thing about this guy is that he's such a smooth operator, his tripe will penetrate historic dividing lines. Watch him quickly ascend as the new articulate spokesman of the Leftists.

As the old blow-hards like Kennedy, Gore and Kerry fall to the wayside, Obama will saunter in and make their insanity palatable to a wider cross-section of America.

He's their Pied Piper. And, he's going to make a lot of trouble for our future.

Very Original!

Perhaps, the next time Obama runs for office his GOP opponent will run commercials pointing out the similarity between the Senator's name and OBL.
