The losers on American Idol have been real winners for Fox. The show continues to earn its highest ratings in its fifth season.
The early rounds of the reality singing competition, which feature competitors who cant hit a note, last night averaged an impressive 15.0 rating among viewers 18-49 for a two-hour episode. Thats a 25 percent increase over the 12.0 last seasons second Tuesday episode earned, and that show was only one hour long.
Last nights episode basically even to the 15.2 overnight rating last weeks season premiere earned, meaning viewers are sticking around.
In terms of total viewers, last nights Idol averaged 34.8 million over its two hours, down not even 2 percent versus last Tuesdays premiere.
The early rounds are popular because theyre really a showcase for the judges, especially nasty Simon Cowell, who delivers zinger after zinger to the wannabe singers.
Foxs success, however, meant troubling results for ABCs Commander-in-Chief. The Geena Davis presidential drama averaged just a 2.2 overnight rating among 18-49s at 9 p.m., easily a season low.
Later in the night, CBSs new Love Monkey averaged just a 3.1 at 10 p.m., third in the timeslot, and not a good sign for the future of the music-themed drama.
Fox finished first for the night among 18-49s, averaging a 15.0 rating and a 35 share. CBS was second at 3.5/8, NBC third at 2.8/7, ABC fourth at 2.6/6, Univision fifth at 1.8/4, WB sixth at 1.0/2 and UPN seventh at 0.7/2.
At 8 p.m. Fox led with a 13.2 average for the first hour of Idol, more than tripling the 3.9 second-place CBS earned that hour for NCIS. Univision was third that hour with a 2.1 for Contra Viento y Marea, while ABC and NBC tied for fourth at 1.9, ABC for its comedies According to Jim (1.9) and Rodney (1.9) and NBC for Fear Factor. That left WB sixth with a 1.2 for a repeat of Gilmore Girls and UPN seventh with a 0.8 for repeats of Girlfriends and Eve.
At 9 p.m. Fox led again, this time with a 16.8 average for the second hour of Idol. CBS was second with a 3.4 for a repeat of CSI: Miami, NBC third with a 2.9 for an hour of Scrubs and ABC fourth with its 2.2 for Commander [New Episode]. Univision was fifth that hour with a 2.1 for Alborada, WB sixth with a 0.9 for a repeat of Supernatural and UPN sixth with a 0.7 for repeats of All of Us and One on One.
With Fox out of the picture at 10 p.m., NBC and ABC tied for the lead at 3.7, NBC for a repeat of Law & Order: SVU and ABC for Boston Legal. CBS was third with its 3.1 for Love Monkey and Univision fourth with a 1.2 for Casos de la Vida Real.
Fox also dominated the night among households with a 19.6 average rating and a 29 share. CBS was second at 8.0/12, ABC third at 6.4/10, NBC fourth at 4.5/7, Univision fifth at 2.2/3, WB sixth at 1.8/3 and UPN seventh at 1.2/2.
Fox increased its lead during the 9 p.m. hour with its 16.9 average rating for the second half of the Idol premiere. CBS was second that hour with a 3.6 for a CSI repeat, NBC third with a 3.0 for an hour of fast-fading Scrubs and ABC fifth with a 2.5 for equally fading Commander-in-Chief. Univision took fifth that hour with a 2.3 for Alborada, WB sixth with a 1.4 for Supernatural and UPN seventh with a 0.4 for another South Beach rerun.
I watch AI...and last night was hillarious......
"meant troubling results for ABCs Commander-in-Chief. The Geena Davis presidential drama averaged just a 2.2 overnight rating among 18-49s at 9 p.m., easily a season low."
Finally the use of the word "troubling" in the true sense of the word. I was getting sick of hearing Kennedy and Durbin using this word to describe their anger toward Judge Alito's opposition to abortion.
Commander in Chief is going up in smoke!!
Burn, baby, BURN!!!
CIC ratings are soon to challenge test patterns.
No doubt I'm in a minority of one here, but I like Commander and Chief and I'm sorry it's not doing so well in the ratings.
I don't think the show has a thing to do with Hillary, nor do I see any connection in content with the Clintons. The character Geena Davis portrays has the morality of her convictions and loves her husband and kids unconditionally.
I don't get the Hillary connection at all.
The looney liberal hollywood still cannot understand why their "shows" do not pick up any ratings.... uhh could it be because mainstream America doesnt share their radical left ideology? nahh couldnt be it... brokeback mountain wins a few golden globes, but has performed disgustingly horrible at the box office.... again what hollywood likes doesnt seem to reflect the values of the American mainstream... and you wonder why demmies are losing office all over the country.
I've been seeing Geena Davis's face all over magazine covers (Readers Digest, Sunday newspaper insert, etc.). Odd, since no one watches her show. Perhaps someone with an agenda is struggling against the tide.
Geena Davis' love poem to Hillary is fading faster than I even though. It lost to a REPEAT of CSI and to Scrubs!? ROFLMAO
Other than getting people used to the idea of a woman president, I agree with you.
I fear for our country when this is the top rated show. To add insult to injury, it has been shown in place of "House" for two weeks now.
I promised my 7 year old son that if he grows up and can't sing a note I will tell him before allowing him to embarrass himself on TV. And yes, I'm his Mom. He is quite the judge already and can usually say "no way" within the first two notes of a song.
LoL!!! Why do even some of the people go on that show when they can't sing! I know i sing terrible. One of my friends even videoed me at karaoke and I sucked big time!!! (I think drinking makes you a better singer because of relaxing you.) Any way I would never go on tv to prove to the whole world that I am a a terrible singer!! Thats nuts! Its funny to watch though. Also I didn't know thats how you spell karaoke until the spell button showed it. Weird is that right???
While you may not "see" any connection, at least three persons involved in the program are "former" Hillary staffers.
I like it, but I am a presidency and White House freak.
Yes I'm well aware of the Clinton connection with the creators of this show, but as of right now there hasn't been any Clinton connection that I can see.
Once I see one, they lose me. But until then, I'll continue to watch as I really enjoy the show a lot.
It's not going to work. That's the good part. Besides, Hillary is just too short. ; )
