Ford used just 79 percent of its North American plant capacity in 2005, down from 86 percent in 2004, according to preliminary numbers released last week by Harbour Consulting Inc., a firm that measures plant productivity. By contrast, rival Toyota Motor Corp. was operating at full capacity.

Funny...I didn't see any mention of the UAW. While unionized American manufacturers are closing plants domestically, non-unionized Japanese and German manufacturers are opening plants in the US and operating at capacity.

I wonder why...[/sarcasm off]

I know white collar Ford people who have had salary cuts now, and more possible cuts to come. There are five Ford assembly and stamping plants in NE Ohio, and they are sweating this out. What their ultimate plan is, is anybody's guess.

yeah, expensive rice and i was wrong i guess we can get it to 500hp In our last foray in the adventure of building the poor man's exotic killer, we did some extensive suspension and brake work to prepare the chassis of Project 300ZXTT to make it worthy for the installation of our anticipated 500-hp-to-the-wheels engine. In this installment we will actually start to dig into the engine, perusing the shiny, trick parts in eager anticipation of their assembly into the beast.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker has been hurt by falling sales of its profitable sport utility vehicles, growing health care and materials costs and labor contracts...

In other words, liberalism is bankrupting the company. Too bad as a nation 48% of us are too stupid to figure it out (voted Kerry and/or Algore).

Ford, Mazda, Chinese partner sign engine joint venture agreement

Associated Press

NANJING, China - Ford Motor Co., Japan's Mazda Motor Corp. and Chinese partner Changan Automotive Group announced a joint venture Tuesday to build a new engine plant in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing.

The agreement calls for the plant to make engines for the auto companies' China factories, Ford said in a statement.

The venture, named Changan Ford Mazda Engine Co., is still subject to government approval.

The announcement comes just days before the automakers' are due to participate in the Shanghai Auto Show. The biennial event showcases China's aspirations to become a major auto exporter, as well as one of the world's biggest vehicle markets.

The new engine plant is part of a more-than $1 billion China investment plan announced in October by Ford. The company is one of several foreign automakers pouring billions of dollars in new spending into China despite signs that growth in auto sales is tapering off.

"This growing Nanjing project is key to our expansion plans in China," said Mark Schulz, Ford executive vice president.

Ford's 2 million square foot joint venture auto assembly plant in Nanjing is due to have an initial annual capacity of 160,000 vehicles. The engine plant is to have an annual capacity of 350,000 engines, Ford said.

The engines made by the plant are to be made using the latest technology and will exceed Chinese government fuel efficiency standards, the company said.

People I know still drive SUVs.

It appears people have stopped buying new ones, however, which is what Ford cares about.

And I'm really lukewarm about the Ford Five-Hundred.

Apparently Ford is lukewarm about the Five Hundred too. They do not consider it a success and it is probably a goner soon. I don't know if I've even seen one, so I have no opinion on it myself. I just know what I read.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said she outlined a package of incentives to Ford last week. Granholm wouldn't disclose the details of the package and said she wasn't given any assurance that Michigan plants would be spared.

Aw' shut up Granholm, go back to Canuckland where you socialists are appreciated.  Haven't you done enough damage to this once Great (Lakes) State?

I despise this 'import' more than Hillary.

No, but you aren't helping by buying foreign cars.

I had a Ford '87 Tarust (transmission), '95 Stratus (after 2 Transmissions), I have a '89 Fleetwood Caddy now.

Driving a brand new 06 F250 Power Stroke Diesel 4X4 crew cab long bed. I have 2000 miles on it now and it gets 16 on the highway at 70 to 80 mph! My old 94 f250 with a 460 gas hog, got 9.5 on the highway and 7 around town. Put a diesel in more cars and trucks.

The 500 is a nice car. My husband is 6'5" and 300 lbs. He got in the front seat comfortably, then with the seat set in the front for him, was able to sit in the back seat. Needless, to say that is unusual for him. We just got a Fusion for our son, and it is really cute. It has a 5 speed Four and he loves its. Nice peppy car, and big enough for his 6'3" frame.

They are a nuisance on the road, the increased weight load is destroying our roads...

LOL!!! Ignorance strikes again! If you did the calculation you would see that SUVs, with larger tire footprints, apply the same weight per square inch to the roads as the little econo-boxes. Public roads can handle a 5000 lb vehicle just as well as a 3000 pound vehicle. But, that's fact, not shrieking emotions speaking. Please feel free to go back to your SUV bashing. Oh, and don't forget the **evil** van, pickup, minivan, etc., which get comparable gas mileage.

Maybe Ford should make them a little bit crappier? So I'd have to buy a new one eventually

LOL! They tried that strategy back in the 60's-70's. It only worked until the Japanese showed up.
