WASHINGTON - President Bush should reform the corrupted politics of the nation's capital to provide honest leadership for Americans, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said Saturday.
Republicans "have absolute power, and it has corrupted their party and led to the culture of corruption that we now have in Washington, D.C.," the Nevada senator said in the weekly Democratic radio address. "It is time now for the president to put an end to this pattern of deceit."
From national security policy to energy legislation, Reid criticized the GOP administration on multiple fronts. He took particular aim at the Medicare prescription drug program.
"The state of the union today is that we have low-income Americans begging for their prescription drugs, and seniors are going without any coverage," Reid said. "The president has botched the Medicare so badly that it doesn't resemble a 'benefit' for most seniors."
Many older Americans have complained of being denied medication since the drug benefit plan began this month.
Reid said a reform plan outlined by the Democrats on Wednesday would provide for honest government, but this goal is not a partisan issue.
"It is a key to a stronger union," he said. "When leaders are accountable to people, not lobbyists, there is no limit to what America can do."
"We can be energy independent, have affordable health care and a strong economy," Reid said. "All it takes is a commitment in Washington to put progress, not politics, first."

Harry , if that were true, we would have had Social Security reform last year, be well on our way towards energy independence and be free from asses like you spewing your same old tired insultative crap, day in and day out.
The party of Boss Tweed, Daley, Clinton... campaigning against corruption..
almost have to admire their Chutzpah...
almost..

"Sen. Reid: America Needs Honest Leadership"
Well, we've seen the Democratic leadership in Congress, and they don't measure up.

Harry 'Rip Van Winkle' Reid must've been sleeping during the Clinton years, or surely he'd have decried their dishonestly and corruption as well.
When the Senate minority leader is replaced by a person who is not accountable to the gambling interests of Nevada and other states, maybe the Dims can come up with a positive plan of some kind and drop the "gotcha" politics.
This is the party of moral bankrupts.
She got some nice silverware and accoutrements from them 8 years in the WH in her plantation mansion.... in fact, most of them are from the WH. ;-)
I learn so many new words hanging around here.
I looked this one up and found a picture of Harry Reid.
Dingy Harry was one of the biggest recipients of Abramoff's largess (read that influence peddling and bribes).
They must have replaced Cynthia McKinney's with his. ;-)
I find it funny that the party of "no controlling legal authority" is suddenly worried about political corruption
After a liar like Bill Clinton
Maybe, just maybe they are not qualified for free medication. I doubt anybody has been denied medication.
And how are the Democrats delaying and filibustering judicial nominees if Republicans have absolute power?
It's like the Dems have been reading FR since the Clinton administration and decided they'd use what they feel are our own "tactics" against us.
Unfortunately, when we say the democrat party is morally bankrupt and totally corrupt, we meant it. They are just flapping their lips as usual.
I doubt it too. Also, never forget that the prescription drug plan finally passed by congress was a COMPROMISE plan between Republicans giving up what they wanted in there and the Democrats who made the changes which allowed it to pass.
Reid would love for you and everyone else to forget that, if any eligible old lady living on canned dog food really IS being denied prescription drug coverage even after siging up, it's the DEMOCRATS' FAULT.
Being that senator Reid himself said, "America Needs Honest Leadership." Shouldn't the media be going wall to wall with the story senator Reid has offered to resign?
