SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - A judge on Friday denied a request to free a Chinese American engineer who was arrested for allegedly trying to send military secrets to China.
U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney listened to more than six hours of testimony before deciding to keep Chi Mak, 65, of Downey in custody. Carney said he found it "troubling" that the defendant had taken restricted documents to his house.
"I'm going to stick with my previous ruling," he said.
The FBI arrested Mak and his wife in October for investigation of conspiracy to steal U.S. government documents. That charge was later dropped and Mak, his wife and brother were accused of failing to register as foreign agents.
Investigators claim that Mak took computer disks from Anaheim-based defense contractor Power Paragon, where he worked on a sensitive research project involving propulsion systems for Navy warships, and took steps to send the information to China.
Mak, who is a U.S. citizen, allegedly passed the information to his brother, who then encrypted or helped encrypt the files and loaded them onto a computer disk, authorities said.
Prosecutors have said previously that authorities recovered from the disk restricted documents on the DDX Destroyer, an advanced technology warship. They also allege that they found two lists in Chinese asking Mak to get documents about submarine torpedo technology, electromagnetic artillery systems, weapon standardization, early warning technology to detect incoming missiles and defenses against nuclear attack.
Authorities say Mak has been feeding information to China since 1983, including highly sensitive information about radar power distribution systems on Aegis warships.

I think that by standing his worthless arse against a wall and then drilling his brain housing group with a 7.62mm NATO round would send a very unmistakeable message to those that think that we don't take spying seriously, don't you? Just a thought.....
