The former owner of a chain of shoreline Dunkin Donuts has been arrested by federal authorities on illegal immigration charges.
The arrests comes after a Team 8 Investigation into whether Guilford resident Jose Calhelha was deliberately brining [sic] illegal aliens into the U.S. to work at his Dunkin Donuts stores.
Both Calhelha and his daughter Diana have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiring to bring illegal aliens into the country. They were arraigned at US District Court in New Haven Friday afternoon and pleaded not guilty. A judge set bond for Jose Calhelha at three and a half million dollars.
A News Channel 8 investigation featured interviews with former Dunkin Donuts store managers who claim Calhelha recruited them from overseas with promises of big money and shortcuts in getting legal immigration status.
Calhelha owned stores in Branford, Westbrook, Derby, East Haven, and Old Saybrook. As a result of News Channel 8's story, Dunkin Donuts forced Calhelha to sell his stores.
U.S. Attorney Kevin O'Connor says the charges reveal a brazen disregard for U.S. immigration, employment and tax laws.
The aliens were from Portugal. Prosecutors say Calhelha placed ads in Portuguese newspapers. They say most of the aliens worked seven days and sometimes as many as 85 hours and earned about $250 dollars a week.
They were also required to do other work including landscaping and painting at stores and snow removal at Calhelha's home.
Here's an article where the employer gets what's coming to him.

Start building the fence.
It should be made a felony for Criminals who overstay their visas and Invaders.
I believe we should give amnesty to these poor CRIMINALS or INVADERS.
This should be a 2 week amnesty to get the heck out of our Country.
The ones who ignore this amnesty should be buried in a tent city jail and fined $10,000 or buried elsewhere.
All aiders and abettors of these CRIMINALS or INVADERS should get 1 year in a tent city jail and a $10,000 fine for each CRIMINAL aided.
Those in government should be the first ones charged.
Illegals in {gasp} Connecticut?
I thought that was just a Texas problem.
How do you say, "Time to make the Donuts" in Spanish?
Only another 15 million employers to prosecute....
And how do you say "Hurry up. I've got other things for you to do besides make donuts"? This guy was working them for all they were worth.

Just making the donuts that Americans won't get up at 4 am to make.
Illegals at Dunkin Donuts Ping!
In my part of central NJ we have a Filiopino family that owns a bakers dozen of Dunkin Donuts shops. The have new employees every couple of weeks coming from back home. they just disappear after that.
This is a very common thing, actually. Typically, it is more informal, with current (illegal)recommending family and friends to the employer. Often, employers end up hiring (and "importing") an entire extended family.
Heck, I thought it was just a California problem.
It now appears to also be a {gasp} Pennsylvania problem. :) Egads!
State police at Clearfield said a routine traffic stop on Interstate 80 Thursday afternoon led to the detention of 10 people who are apparently in the United State illegally.Customs and Immigration Enforcement took custody of: Fernando Ramirez-Perez, 23; Juan Luevano-Macias, 27, Daniel Ortiz-Ochoa, 25; Miguel Tovar-Chavez, 34, Laura Ventura-Cruz, 20, Ruben Cabelero-Vera, 26, Blanca Gonzalez-Cortez, 30, Jose Vera-Gonzalez, 41, Juan Salas-Rocha, 28, and Aaron Velasquez-Santiago, 21. All are from Mexico, according to state police.
Vera-Gonzalez and Salas-Rochas had both previously been removed from the U.S. and are subject to prosecution by ICE, state police reported.
They're working off their required stay inorder to fulfill whatever they've claimed was their employer for the Green Card or VISA or whatever it is -- showing up only as long as it takes to prove they "work" wherever. Either that or they have a really objectionable supervisor there, ha.
All those last names sure suggest that they're from Mexico, Central and/or South America. As in, d'oh, they really ARE still pouring through the southern border so, yes, a fence across the southern border would have some effect.
Either that or there are a lot of tunnels down there.
the top story on the 24 hr news radio 1010 WINS [NYC] today was, from New Jersey:
Illegal alien kidnaps mom, murders her 2 sons!!
[immigration status is more often never mentioned in these stories]
the local ABC-TV affiliate didn't mention immigration status in their 6pm broadcast of the story
If you haven't seen it yet, here is a thread about that:
