The tickets were free, but a Westmont woman is paying a steep price -- 30 days in jail -- for attending a taping of "The Jerry Springer Show'' last fall.
Shannon N. Cook was sentenced to the jail term because she left her three young children home alone for hours last October while she watched the show being taped in Chicago.
The youngsters, all younger than 5, were found unattended Oct. 19 after the two oldest left their apartment and began knocking on a neighbor's door, authorities said.
The neighbor called police, who were stunned to see such young children left home alone, said Westmont Police Detective Jim Schlicher....

There's some question about the ages--between 3 years and 9 months or 3 years and 5 months. She said she didn't think she would be gone until almost 1 in the morning.
WTF? Is she advancing the excuse that it would have been OK to leave toddlers alone for a few hours, but nine hours was too long?
