It was a serious question. Polygamy was an "everlasting covenant". It has not been rescinded and was only suspended. It was suspended because it had obviously become a problem inasmuch as the US Supreme Court had ruled that the Congress was within it's rights to outlaw the practice and if it had been continued, then a lot of Mormons were going to jail. Indeed a lot of them did go to jail even after the suspension of the revelation. It was only after the suspension of the everlating covenant that Mormonism moved from being a pecular sect to being a "mainstream" religion.
I suspect that the "everlasting covenant" has seen it's last days on the earth. There's just too much at stake for the LDS Church to return to that "evertlasting covenant" even if the US Government decided that it was perfectly OK with them.
I suspect that my prophecy that plural marriage is a permanent thing of the past is going to be true a lot longer than Joseph Smith's prophecy that it would be an "everlasting covenant":
"Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you my servant Joseph, that inasmuch as you have inquired of my hand to know and understand wherein I, the Lord Justified my servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as also Moses, David and Solomon, my servants, as touching the principle and doctrine of their having many wives and concubines--
"Behold, and lo, I am the Lord thy God, and will answer thee as touching this matter.
"Therefore, prepare thy heart to receive and obey the instructions . . .
"For behold, I reveal unto you a new and everlasting covenant; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned; for no one can reject this covenant and be permitted to enter into my glory. . . .
"And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith [Joseph Smith's wife] receive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God. . . .
"And again, as pertaining to the law of the priesthood--if any man espouse a virgin, and desire to espouse another . . . he is justified; he cannot commit adultery with that that belongeth unto him and to no one else.
"And if he have ten virgins given unto him by this law, he cannot commit adultery, for they belong to him and they are given unto him; therefore is he justified." (Doctrine and Covenants, Section 132, verses 1-3, 52, 61-62)
My lawer friend it is evertlasting covenant between the Lord and those who made the covenant!
It seems what ever purpose the Lord had in mind has been accomplished!
I always ponder things of Universal Laws and the Laws of various type of Kingdoms!
To me the Garden of Eden was beautiful but never afforded an increase so one would always remain in that state!
Earth is subject to both life and death and one has freewill to choose which side of this law they want to walk!
It is through the scriptures and history that I am able to have a gleam.
So to me there is more to Plural marriage than what those on earth are limit it to!
I also feel what ever souls needed to come to earth under this last covenant was fullfiled!
I also think this occured in every displensation, we do have records recored in two of those dispensations as in the OT one of Abraham and also Jacob/Israel.
The problem is much more complex than just throwing everyone in jail. And yes, polygamists live through Utah society. There were three polygamous families in my sister's neighborhood in West Jordan. When Tom Green was convicted, they just disappeared. The polygamous judge resigned last week when he lost his appearl.
What exactly would you like the LDS church and members to do? Many of these families have wealth like you wouldn't believe (mostly the leaders suck the money up.) The Short Creek Raid in the fifties ended the practice of rounding up the polygamous men and separating families. Getting the adherents to renounce their beliefs and lifestyles would be a first step.
And as a side note, I used to work with a man who know practices polygamy with the Manti bunch. He had been married and divorced three times, then I guess he decided that many wives was the key. He now has three wives and many children. I saw him a few years ago, he professes to be happy.
My sister's missionary companion comes from Cedar City. There's lots of polygamy there. Apparently, the men would just marry the girls. Some of the families were quite organized, two or three wives would get educated and work at jobs, others would stay home with the kids. And the man? Yup, his main job was procreating.
Here is an article I posted several years ago. Very informative. Polygamy on the Dole
I think he has come up with a scam, hiding behind this approach.
It used to be in Southern Utah that the polygamists did the best work for the money on construction projects. Last month a group from Colorado City made a bid on a HVAC project for us. The competing bid was 22,000. They came in at double. I think they are changing their approach and getting ready to make a major move or already have. One of the Hilldale construction groups recently relocated to Mesquite. It's very interesting to go shopping at Wal-Mart in Cedar City. My grandsons just give me that look when they see five or six women in their special outfits with numerous blank faced kids following.
Unfortunately you can pick the wives out pretty easily. Long hair either braided in a bun, long dress, long white blouses underneath, sensible shoes. And really no expression in their eyes. I will never forget the polygamist family at Lagoon, one poor wife got to watch the babies in the strollers. I kid you not, 12 strollers around her.
I think Tom Green got the women too by using the religious approach. Yuk, he was at his high school reunion several years ago, just reveling in the attention and his wives.
