Reporter's mom asks for mercy
Washington Post by way of Seattle Times ^ | 20JAN06 | Ellen Knickmeyer

BAGHDAD, Iraq — The mother of an American journalist kidnapped in Iraq appealed for her daughter's life on Thursday, the eve of a deadline set by her captors for the release of all women in U.S. custody in the country.

"Taking vengeance on my innocent daughter, who loves Iraq and its people, will not create justice," Mary Beth Carroll said in a message aimed at the gunmen holding Jill Carroll, 28.

Sunni Muslim leaders in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East joined intensifying calls for mercy. But as new video images emerged Thursday of the pale, dark-haired woman surrounded by armed and masked men, U.S. authorities showed no sign of yielding to the kidnappers' demand.

In Washington, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said the Bush administration was working to secure Carroll's freedom, but he said no Iraqi detainees were expected to be released soon.

Carroll, a freelance reporter for The Christian Science Monitor, was abducted Jan. 7.

It must be so horrible if such scum has gained control over your kids. As a family father I understand that this mother is going to try everything - even if it hurts our interests in Iraq - to save her child from being beheaded by those barbarians. All we can do is to pray for her and her daughter and I hope that many fellow Freepers are follow me in doing that.

Mercy is an alien concept to these barbarous demons. God help this lady. I pray her daughter lives and her captors don't.

Meanwhile bin Laden cozies up to US Liberals with a temporary 'truce' offer. US attacks are imminent, but we can yield to blackmail -- nothing dishonorable about that, bin Laden says. Just leave Iraq and Afghanistan, (get out of the Middle East.) How long before he demands we get out of every country where Muslims reside? Doubtless democrats will soon show up on TV to talk about how fast we should leave. I wonder if journalists ever think about the absolutes of good and evil. Guess not.

Mom should have told her daughter not to go live among the mudslimes. Lie down with dogs...

Too little, too late. She should have read her daughter the riot act when she first said that she wanted to go live amongst the mudslimes. According to her mother, it sounds like the daughter is a mudslime sympathizer. It look like things did not work out so well for her, which was entirely predictable, when one goes to dangerous neighborhoods to meet with Sunni leaders.

If I sound angry, I am. Jill Carroll and her family have my heartfelt prayers for her safe release, but journalists like Mike Wallace who stick to this I'm 'neutral' nonsense and get American soldiers killed are beyond the pale. Now AlJazeera's operates in the US, churning out enemy propaganda, telling Greta Van Sustren on Fox that they have no idea where bin Laden's tape comes from or even if they've aired the whole thing. The general manager was 'too busy' to watch the entire tape. If NY goes up in smoke again, with the Arab street cheering, will the MSM wonder if they didn't have a hand in it? I'll tell you one thing. AlJazeera isn't neutral.

He even recommends a book by a liberal, presumably Jewish, author who Osama thinks shows the proper accommodation and America hating attitude.

"even if it hurts our interests in Iraq"

Our position?

I thought the German position was that you wanted America to fail in Iraq, so that you and the French can go on to lead the New World Order.

What's a "mudslime?" I might live among them as well.

I certainly have compassion for this reporter and for her loved ones back home and I pray that she remains alive and is freed.

That being said, anybody who has been in this country so much as a week should know that you don't go gallivanting around Baghdad as you would in London or New York. Boneheaded move. And it's very obvious that you just don't do that....from the moment of one's arrival here.

I cannot understand for the life of me understand why any westerner would do something so stupid.

Hehe! Not all Germans share the views of Gerhard Schroeder. I am intelligent enough to have a differentiated point of view.

Germany (and France) is more the Schroeder and Chirac.

Yeah, bin Laden says if the U.S. gets out of Afghanistan and Iraq, he'll leave the U.S. alone.

Riiiiiight, Osama. Yeah, we believe you.

We weren't in Afghanistan or Iraq when he hit us the first (and we hope last) time.

The ones stupid enough to think they can get away with it, are the ones going to Iraq. With all the billions of people in the world, you can always find somebody to do something foolish

Yes, that was also a stupid miscalculation on her part. And she's been in Iraq for three years???

Doesn't matter how you "disguise" yourself here. "They" know who we are, where we are and our general movements and anyone who doesn't realize that has his or her head in a location that requires good contortionist skills.

Excellent security is essential to survival. She had a security detail available and chose not to use it.

Boneheaded.

I beg your pardon???

A bit of a general statement isn't that??

She might have been after the "scoop". She has grown up seeing reporters who take risks, being rewarded. And like you say, she thought her love for the Iraqi people would be returned by those whom she loved. Love from afar is sometimes best.

He (Number one diaper head) seems to forget that they killed a lot of people on 9/11 and we won't forget, nor leave hunt until his slimy head is in some bounty hunters bucket or on the lodge pole of a seal team.

Now that is a peace offer we can live with
