Communism's attitude to religion (or at least to the use of religion) is very inconsistent. While promoting liberal, heterodox forms of religion for the most part they do make exceptions: the Armenian Church in Soviet Armenia, Irish Catholics in nineteenth century Ireland, the fundamentalist Black Protestant churches, non-western "indigenous peoples," and of course islam.
For me the poster boy and ultimate symbol of this bizarre mixture of atheistic humanism and fundamentalist religion gone haywire is the late, unlamented Rev. Jim Jones (mach shemo!)--about as twisted an individual as ever existed.
