THERE HAS BEEN a lot of discussion about a recent vote by the Costa Mesa City Council regarding illegal immigration. To the best of my knowledge, no other city has approved such a proposal, and I would like to clarify what it does and does not do.
Currently, when someone is arrested for breaking the law, most officers are not authorized to ask about the suspect's immigration status. Costa Mesa's proposal would involve training the police gang detail, the special enforcement detail, investigators and possibly custody personnel to enforce immigration laws when a major crime is involved. The authority for it comes from a law passed by Congress, and the training would be done under the guidance of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. It is similar to what is being proposed at the county level and will focus on the most dangerous offenders.
Officers would simply carry out the policy through the course of their daily duties if they arrest someone for a major crime. There would be no sweeps for enforcement of immigration laws alone, as some have been concerned about. In other words, there must be another crime involved first.

just to clarify a few things for those who might not know. costa mesa is a city in orange county. it is very affluent, perhaps the lowest price home starts at 700K. its claim to fame is south coast plaza, one of the ritziest shopping centers in america. a very nice place.
I wonder how they define "a major crime".
I wonder if Costa Mesa will consider an unlicensed driver arrested for drunk driving as a major crime? (I doubt that they will.)
In the Los Angeles area, traditionally police do not deal with immigration; the reason being, that there are over a million illegals in LA. You can't have a million people in a city afraid to deal with the police. Even if an illegal has to testify in court as a witness, he knows he will not have to worry about revealing his immigration status.
If this is changed, then you will never get witnesses for trials, never get cooperation with the police on any issue,
and a sub-culture will develop which the police never penetrate and which exists without police protection.
So, in general, let the Feds worry about stopping the illegals at the border.
I know, I live here.

They're doing a lousy job. For that reason, I disagree with you and think that local law enforcement should be involved with this.

Sounds like an attitude. Never tell the US they can't do something. Especially when it's citizens and I mean legal citizens are as fed up as they are now. Real ID. Enforce employment laws and you will see a massive migration right back to Mexico. One way gates in the fence. Going south?
We know this is the truth, because we're living in the mess! Illegals know that L.A. is a "sanctuary city",(which is outrageous). L.A. is illegal alien heaven, thanks to this policy.
With a mayor (Villaraigosa) who is or was a member of MECHA, L.A. is turning into Mexico norte.

That pretty much sums up the way it is now, without immigration enforcement. Mexicans culturally don't trust police - In Mexico, when someone is kidnapped it is often because the police are involved, so it is not their reflex to trust and call the cops when a problem arises.
People like you are aiders and abetters of the invasion of the United States of America.
Costa Mesa is mostly very nice, but does have its blight over on the west side, and is bordered to the north by Santa Ana, which is jam packed with illegals.
Just a matter of time before California is flushed. I do mean flushed. Like a toilet. The effluent will arrive in Mexico.
