There are some campus groups advertising trips on my campus to Venezuela, including a catholic group and the ISO. They want people to see what good things Chavez has done for his country. The advertisment talks about the good things the Cuban doctors have done. They are looney leftists, however
The websites are:
www.witnessforpeace.org
www.calsmadison.org (CALS=Community action on Latin America)
Moscow on Mendota PING!
Come to Thereisenstadt and see how good those Jews have it under Hitler.
Let's see. I can go to see Commies in Venezuela or Carnival in Rio. Hmm. Decisions, decisions.
Most of the people I've known who took these spring break trips end up hard core independent small "L" classical liberals upon returning.
If you know anyone who takes any of the Castro-subsidized spring break trips or semester abroad trips to Cuba, get a copy of Dinesh D'Souza's "Illiberal Education" in their hands as soon as they return, then follow up by giving them D'Souza's "What's So Great About America".
BTW, Venezeula is NOT Communist, there is still a middle class throughout the country that needs the free world's support, and many Americans still travel there to see the beautiful country and friendly people, visit relatives, and perform business there.
Every time another American businessman sitting in the US is convinced Venezeula is Communist before going there himself, another planeload will be filled by the cadre of Chinese businessmen and entrepreneurs who are scouring South America in search of business oppurtunities. Another oppurtunity to hold the links between the US's and Venezeula's people is lost.
Hopefully it's a one-way trip.
Well the fishing is good there. LOL.

In the `60s their grandparents went to Cuba.
Aha, do they get to go Venezuela's version of the Potempkin Village, where disease and sickness have been eradicated? Maybe they can name it after Walter Duranty, like "Duranty Village"?
Why does UW Madison attract all the loonies?
Surely it isn't the lure of Beer, Brats and Brett.
In fact, Cuba is redesigning itself to be the "hospital" for all of South and Central America, starting in particular with countries with communist leanings (which means most of them). They are investing a HUGE amount of money into upgrading their health care facilities to exceed that which is found in the US.
Like the "Venceremos Brigades" when I was in college.
Oh, Brother! I don't know how you make it through a day on campus, Thunder, LOL! You have a stronger stomach than I do. :)
Did you hear about the campus kids that were charged with a Hate Crime today for trashing a Gay Assistance bulletin board? I've heard news reports, but can't find anything in print yet. Post it if you see it and ping me if you have time. Thanks!
I think calling Venezuela communist is a little over the top. It ain't so.
You have Madison and Milwaukee, and then you have the rest of Wisconsin (The Real Wisconsin)
Yes, I, myself plan on contracting my next life-threatening condition there in the "workers paradise," eager as I am to experience not only the superb health care, but also the flood of love's warmth that I feel sure will be extended to me. Why, before long, hospital beds will be empty here in the US, with all the sick folk flooding south from Miami! (/sarc)
I love the REAL Wisconsin. Miss it tremendously.
How UW Madison turned into a "liberal" bastion is beyond me.
See you at the bubbler.
You can laugh, but Castro sees medicine and medical research as the means to save his economy and they are investing BILLIONS. An overseas company I work for just made the largest sale in company history - over 20 million euros - to Castro. The Cubans are also moving into cancer research and making good progress. 3500 students are moving from Venzuela to Cuba to study medicine and related professions. It is amazing what is taking place there in just the last year. Your views on Cuba need to catch up with reality.
Uhhh... So is North Korea, Iran and other backword countries.
