if one must err, one should err toward the punishment favored in 1937 rather than none. It seems to set a better tone for society...

Yes I think you're right there. The wooden paddle in high school, actually having to earn grades, no outcome based education (where whatever you said is 'correct' because that's how you felt). We could probably create a huge list which would snuff out crimes like this, for the most part.

I remember in 1987 when I was leaving high school, it was the first year that the area football association gave a #1 trophy to every kid in the league, regardless of where they finished that year. During my time it was never like that, and I can see the results in people just 10 years younger than I am. There's a certain detachment from reality that they are the poorer for having (and the rest of us are too, I'd say).

Oh, well. Maybe I'll start a private school that has the slogan "Discipline First"!!

Stealing some soda is slightly different than killing someone.
I swiped a piece of bubble gum when i was 5.
And have still turned out to be productive member of society.
LOL
These kids are evil pure and simple.
Reminds of the evil kids in the movie Bully, which is based on true story that also took place in Fort Lauderdale.

Liberal Democrat election volunteers in training.

They were just putting in practice their liberal compassion.

Won't argue with that. But I wonder if these kids were ever punished for anything. My guess would be "no". At least, not in any meaningful way...

I swiped a piece of bubble gum when i was 5.

I stole a pencil from the dime store when I was five. When my mother found out about it, I had to take it back to the store, confess and pay them a nickel from my allowance for it.

I still recall how mortified I was. And I've never stolen anything since. Not even a paper clip.

If children learn their values early, as you did, they've got a chance to be "a productive member of society". It's up to the parents.

I was born in 1940; my sister was born in 1948. Yet, it seems as if there is a generational gulf between us.

My values aren't much different than those of my parents -- born in the teens and survivors of the Great Depression. My mom, now 93, and I see things pretty much alike.

My sister's values, however, are those of the sixties -- liberal, permissive, "modern". We see eye-to-eye on virtually nothing -- politics, economics, child-rearing, cultural, you name it.

I can't imagine an athletic (or scholastic) competition where "everybody wins". Like you, I came from era when there was one winner and you learned from your losses.

My sister, on the other hand, believes that competition is "unhealthy". By her lights, there shouldn't be any losers. Unfortunately, that creates a circumstance where there can be no winners, either.

And when there can be no winners, why play...???

I wonder what they'll do to a 17 year old. Probably nothing.

He will be treated as an adult; otherwise, they would not have released his name.

in Toms River NJ there was a case of teens beating bums.they were homeless men living in the woods and i think the kids knew these men. there seems to be a thing with teens right now that this a cool thing to do. i am not sure if one of them video taped it or if that was another case i am thinking of but its happening more often then we know about. these boys should face many years or life in jail.

I can't imagine how they'd know that he'd be treated as an adult at this point. They just arrested him.

That reminds me of when I stole a Hershey Bar from the corner store in Brooklyn, I was about 5, my mother caught me eating it at home. I was halfway finished. My mother spanked me, got me and my brother dressed, walked us back to the store, made me pay for the Hershey Bar and give the remaining portion back to the store owner. The owner tried to tell my Mom I could have it, but she made me leave it there on the counter. I learned my lesson.

I am sure homeless people get murdered by each other over fights regarding drugs and what not. What I think makes this story unique is that the crime seems like it was committed for fun by these two monsters.

Great that they surrendered. Now execute them.

I believe the 17-year-old is protected by the SCOTUS (last year's model, thank God) which ruled, after reflecting on European law, that execution of minors is cruel and unusual.

I fervently long to hear of the execution of the 18-year-old. Are they still using Old Sparky in Stark? I hope so.

I hope the younger one sleeps with a new sweetheart every night for the next twenty years.
