I think President Bush understood that it was already too late to stop this and the only hope was to allow the europeans to come to the same conclusion on their own. The only way to do that was to allow them to try their "peaceful means". I think it was always going to end the same way, it was just a question of if we had to do it alone or if the west would finally understand that their entire way of life was being threatened.

Actually I agree with you - Bush was playing a tactical waiting game - I'm told he is good a poker. I just wanted to leave you in no doubt about the European mindset.
